This song was not born out of business negotiations or formal contracts. Instead, it is the result of a long-standing friendship that had not yet materialized into a musical project.
In an interview with InyaRwanda, Yago Pon Dat explained that the idea to collaborate did not come from him. Rather, Pallaso personally reached out and suggested they work together, noting how surprising it was that they had known each other for a while without creating music together.
He said: “Pallaso never asked me for anything. He called me while I was at home and said, ‘Yago, come let’s go to the studio. Can you believe we’ve never done a song together?’ When we got to the studio, we immediately recorded ‘Yo Love.’ There was no payment involved. He appreciates my talent and has always known it.”
These remarks highlight that “Yo Love” was built on mutual respect and trust between the two artists, with Pallaso affirming his recognition of Yago’s talent.
Yago Pon Dat confirmed that “Yo Love” is the first single off his third album, which he says will differ significantly from his previous projects in terms of collaborations and international reach.
“This is the first song from my third album. The album will feature many songs, especially collaborations with several international artists,” he said.
This signals Yago’s broader vision for his music career. He is no longer focusing solely on the local market but is expanding toward the regional and international scene.
In East African music, not all successful collaborations are driven by financial agreements. Sometimes friendship and trust alone are enough to create a hit song. “Yo Love” stands as an example of how two artists can meet in a studio, combine their talents, and produce a track expected to resonate widely.
For Yago, working with Pallaso is a strategic move. It reflects his intention to expand his musical footprint and align himself with established regional names as he prepares what he hopes will be his strongest album yet. His previous projects include “Yago Life II” and “Suwejo.”
Pius Mayanja, popularly known as Pallaso, is one of Uganda’s leading artists and a prominent figure in East Africa. He has built a strong reputation in genres such as Dancehall, Afrobeat, and Afropop.
Pallaso comes from Uganda’s renowned Mayanja musical family, alongside well-known artists such as Jose Chameleoneand Weasel (formerly part of the duo Radio & Weasel). Growing up in such a family gave him early exposure to music, while also placing pressure on him to establish his own unique identity.
At the beginning of his career, Pallaso moved to the United States, where he spent time recording music and learning about the international music market. That experience helped him refine his sound and blend African rhythms with global influences.
Upon returning to Uganda, he released several hit songs that cemented his fame, including “Amaaso,” “Go Down Low,” “Malamu,” and “Twatoba,” which became popular in clubs and on radio stations.
He is known for fusing Dancehall with African sounds, performing in multiple languages including Luganda and English, enabling his music to cross borders beyond Uganda.
Over the years, Pallaso has collaborated with artists from Uganda and across the region, including Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania, helping him expand his audience and solidify his status as a regional artist.
Although his journey has included challenges—ranging from disputes with fellow artists to personal controversies—he has consistently returned with new music, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his craft.
Today, Pallaso remains one of the most influential artists in Uganda and the wider East African region. He enjoys strong support from young audiences, performs before thousands at major concerts, and continues releasing new music while collaborating internationally.
His journey reflects that of an artist who grew up in a musical dynasty but deliberately carved out his own identity—turning it into a powerful force that has propelled him onto the international stage.
