Which Certified Helmet Should You Buy and Wear When Riding a Motorcycle?

Whenever you are buying a helmet, make sure to carefully check that it has an identification number and complies with the standards and requirements set by the Rwanda Standards Board under RS 576:2024, in order to protect your life.

As part of efforts to promote and safeguard the health and safety of Rwandans—especially motorcycle users—the Government of Rwanda, through the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), established a helmet testing laboratory in 2024.

This laboratory is the first of its kind in Africa, equipped with modern technology and the capacity to test 30 to 40 helmets per day, delivering 100% reliable results.

At the launch of the facility, the Director General of RSB, Raymond Murenzi, said the laboratory was established to enhance road safety, particularly for motorcycle riders and passengers.

He stated: “Road safety and the lives of Rwandans are a major responsibility that we must protect. As the national standards body, ensuring the safety of road users is one of our key priorities. That is why we introduced quality standards that define how helmets should be manufactured—whether they are imported or produced locally in the future.”

Currently, helmets that meet quality standards and have been approved by the RSB testing laboratory are available on the market. The public is encouraged to purchase and use certified helmets that comply with RSB standard RS 576:2024.

Accidents happen without warning. Ride safely and protect your head by wearing a certified, high-quality helmet—because it is your first and most important line of protection in the event of an accident.
