Vex Prince on BBC: Why Rwandan Music Is Ready for the Global Market

Rwandan artist Prince Eric Munezero, popularly known as Vex Prince, has opened up about his musical journey, his rise on the international stage, and his vision for taking Rwandan music to the world during a recent 26-minute interview with BBC.

The fast-rising singer began the interview by performing some of his songs before being introduced as one of Africa’s emerging artists known for his energetic stage presence and bold fashion choices. Vex Prince explained that for modern artists, talent alone is not enough; presentation also plays a major role.

“People who watch my music videos can see how I present myself. My fashion style is unique, and it helps people understand who I am as an artist,” he said.

Over the years, the singer has become known for wearing eye-catching outfits designed by Rwandan fashion creatives, ranging from oversized coats and artistic suits to colorful pieces decorated with beads and flowers.

The MASA Festival Experience in Côte d’Ivoire

One of the major highlights of the conversation was Vex Prince’s participation in the prestigious MASA (Marché des Arts du Spectacle Africain) festival held in Côte d’Ivoire in April 2026.

According to the artist, the festival played a significant role in expanding his audience beyond Rwanda. He revealed that tickets for his performances sold out and that he was overwhelmed by the energy of the crowd in Abidjan.

“The audience had incredible energy. They sang along, danced to every song, and made my performance even better. They really love to dance,” he said.

Vex Prince also pointed out a cultural difference between music fans in Côte d’Ivoire and those in Rwanda.

“Rwandans love music, but they don’t dance as much as people in Abidjan. Even if you bring the biggest star in the world, many will simply watch and enjoy the performance rather than dance,” he noted.

“Levitation” and the Journey of Self-Discovery

The artist described his sound as a blend of Afrobeats, Afro Fusion, R&B, and Amapiano. He also spoke extensively about his debut album, “Levitation,” released in 2025.

According to him, the album represents personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional elevation.

“Levitation is about becoming a higher version of myself. It reflects self-discovery, evolution, and believing in my potential. This album is the real me. Every lyric, every vibe, and every message came straight from my heart,” he explained.

The 12-track project includes songs such as Wahala, Laler, Somebody, Holy Water, Make You Mine, Money, Normally, Swear, and Turn Up. During the interview, he discussed the inspiration behind each song and the messages they carry.

International Collaborations and Growing Recognition

Vex Prince credited songs such as “Laler,” featuring Fior 2 Bior, and “Money,” featuring Dorty, for helping him gain international exposure. He said working with French-speaking artists allowed him to reach new audiences and promote cultural exchange between Rwanda and Côte d’Ivoire.

He added that the music videos for these songs were filmed in Rwanda, helping showcase the country to a broader audience. One of the songs has surpassed one million views on YouTube and has received airplay on major television networks, including Trace Africa and Rwanda TV.

Writing More Than 500 Songs

Vex Prince revealed that he began writing music while still in high school but started pursuing it professionally in 2019. Most of his songwriting, he said, is inspired by his personal experiences and life journey.

His breakthrough came in 2022 when he visited a recording studio with friends and met producer Mandex. “I went to see how a studio works, and that’s where I met my first producer, Mandex. We started working together immediately,” he recalled.

The artist said the partnership was highly productive and revealed that he wrote more than 500 songs in just three years. “We recorded as many songs as possible. Within three years, I had written over 500 songs,” he said.

How KOKO Productions Changed His Career

Vex Prince described 2024 as a turning point after signing with KOKO Productions. “I found the right team. They changed my life and my career. We share the same vision and goals. They understand my ideas, and I understand theirs,” he said.

He believes the support and structure provided by the label have been crucial to his growth as an artist.

A Call to Invest in Rwandan Music

During the interview, Vex Prince made a passionate appeal to international investors, encouraging them to explore opportunities within Rwanda’s music industry. He argued that Rwandan artists possess immense talent and have the potential to compete globally.

“There is so much talent in Rwanda. Our artists have what it takes to succeed internationally. I encourage investors to look at the opportunities in Rwandan music and invest in the industry,” he said.

The singer revealed that his favorite song from Levitation is “Somebody.” He also expressed excitement about the positive reception of his latest single, “Falling,” produced by Element EleéeH.

Looking ahead, Vex Prince is working on his second studio album and preparing a major music festival scheduled for August 2027. The project, which he recently discussed with Minister of Youth and Arts, Dr. Jean Nepo Abdallah Utumatwishima, aims to promote Rwandan music and strengthen its international presence.

As his career continues to expand beyond Rwanda’s borders, Vex Prince says he remains committed to producing world-class music and representing Rwanda on the global stage.
