Joshua Baraka began turning heads in 2023 with the release of his hit song “Nana,” which captivated audiences across Africa and beyond. Born in the Bwaise area of Kampala—a neighborhood he fondly calls the “ghetto” for its vibrant community despite widespread poverty—Baraka's love for music took root early in his life.
Starting his music journey at just six years old, Baraka dedicated his first song to his mother. His father, a pastor, played a pivotal role in sparking his interest in musical instruments at church. By age 12, this young talent immersed himself deeper into music by studying it formally at school.
How “Nana” Sparked a Turning Point
The release of “Nana” when Baraka was 22 revolutionized his career. It led to a contract with Moves Recordings, a leading UK-based label specializing in Afrobeats music. The remix of “Nana” featured iconic African superstars like Joeboy from Nigeria, King Promise from Ghana, and Bien from Kenya. These collaborations paved the way for Baraka’s first international tours, taking him to countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK.
Unmatched Achievements in Afrobeats
Joshua Baraka has released over ten albums, including "Baby Steps," "Belinda," and "Sana." Professionally, he entered the music scene at age 19, performing in bars and restaurants while playing the piano. By blending Afrobeats, Dancehall, and RnB, Baraka has crafted a distinctive sound that sets him apart within the African music industry.
Reflecting on the success of “Nana,” Baraka expressed, “I always felt ‘Nana’ was special, but I never dreamed it would have global impact. It validated how music can transform lives.”
Milestone of 1,000 Songs and a Heartfelt Message to Fans
In an emotional Twitter post, Baraka revealed, "Music. What a gift to the
world. Just wrote my 1000th song today…I’ve probably
written more…It’s crazy that I still have things to say…Now more than ever.…Thank
you for keeping me going.…God is the greatest. May He bless you.
