Transforming Rwanda's Future: The Impact of Vocational Training and Don Bosco Initiatives

Discover how vocational training empowers over 115,000 Rwandan students, reduces unemployment, and builds a knowledge-based future with Don Bosco initiatives.

Vocational schools and technical education are essential pillars of Rwanda's plan to develop a knowledge-based economy. These programs aim to transition Rwanda from a developing nation to middle-income status by 2035 and high-income status by 2050.

Statistics reveal that over 115,000 students are enrolled in vocational and technical schools, comprising 51,557 female students (44.6%) and 63,959 male students (55.4%).

According to the 2024 report from the National Institute of Statistics, an impressive 67.2% of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates successfully find employment, while the unemployment rate within this group stands at 15.7%.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the Don Bosco Youth Education For All organization officially began its collaboration with the Rwandan government to uplift young people’s livelihoods through vocational education. This marked a major milestone in addressing youth unemployment and poverty.

The ceremony took place in Gasagara Cell, Gikomero Sector, Gasabo District. The organization started by supporting students from Don Bosco Muhazi Vocational School. They provided hygiene supplies, food donations, and covered accommodation fees for students residing outside the school premises.

The school currently supports over 180 students, many from low-income families across Rwanda. Despite tuition fees ranging between RWF 5,000 and RWF 20,000, some students struggle to meet these costs, leading to potential dropouts.

Vocational Training: A Global Solution to Unemployment

Vocational training as a solution to unemployment worldwide

Globally, vocational education is acknowledged as a practical solution to combat unemployment. Reports show that job markets in various countries prefer skilled workers over university graduates lacking practical knowledge.

Father Servilien Ufitamahoro, Director of Don Bosco Youth Education For All, emphasized that Gikomero was selected as the launch site due to its socioeconomic challenges. “Initiatives to combat poverty and improve youth livelihoods must begin where they are needed most,” he highlighted.

He added: “We urge young people to view this support as a reminder of their potential and to channel their energy into acquiring life-changing skills for themselves, their families, and the nation.”

Additionally, Father Ufitamahoro encouraged young people to avoid harmful behaviors, including substance abuse, sexual misconduct, and violence, which could hinder their potential.

Gratitude from Students and Teachers

Sister Leocadie Nyanzira, who works closely with students at Don Bosco Muhazi, expressed appreciation for the unwavering assistance. She explained, “This support rescued us. Food supplies were completely depleted. Now, students can focus on thriving academically without worrying about basic needs.”

Vumiriya, a relieved student, shared: “We are deeply grateful. Many of us face tough circumstances, but receiving this help shows us that compassionate individuals are striving to ensure youths from poor backgrounds also succeed.”

Vocational Skills: A Path to a Promising Future

At Don Bosco Muhazi Vocational School, students train in diverse trades such as engineering, carpentry, construction, tailoring, technology, and crafts. This practical education enables many to establish businesses or quickly gain employment upon graduation.

The Don Bosco Youth Education For All organization, a leading NGO, is committed to empowering underprivileged youth. Its programs not only focus on practical education and skills but also promote human rights, teamwork, unity, and cultural growth among Rwandans.

Additionally, the organization engages in environmental conservation and sustainable development initiatives, reinforcing national efforts to build a healthier, equitable Rwanda. The ultimate aim is for youth to serve as the engines of sustainable development now and in the future.

Vocational training shaping Rwanda's sustainable future

As the world increasingly prioritizes knowledge-based economies, Rwanda positions vocational education at the forefront of its development strategies. The focus is to empower young people by equipping them with knowledge and skills to create opportunities instead of waiting for aid.

This vision is shared by Don Bosco Youth Education For All. The organization assists in transforming how the nation nurtures its youth, ensuring that vocational skills serve as a catalyst for sustainable change and economic empowerment.
