The Untold Story Behind M Izzo’s Hit Track ‘Inkweto’

Rapper M Izzo shares the surprising journey of his hit song ‘Inkweto,’ from its creation with producer T Brown to Kamichi’s bold decision that skyrocketed its fame.

M Izzo revealed the story behind his hit song ‘Inkweto’ during the “Echoes of Fame” interview on InyaRwanda TV. He explained that the song was produced by T Brown after another successful track of his, titled ‘Ni Njye,’ which had received praise from artists such as Ama G The Black and Riderman and was produced by First Boy.

M Izzo shared that he always wanted to collaborate with producer T Brown but found it difficult to make that happen. One day, he approached him outside and expressed his eagerness to work together. However, T Brown refused to partner with him if he had consumed alcohol.

He recounted T Brown’s words, saying, "T Brown told me, 'I don't want to work with you if you’ve been drinking alcohol. Every time I see you, you've been drinking.' He said he wanted to create music with me but under the condition that I had not consumed anything."

The rapper admitted that he initially dismissed the beat for ‘Inkweto’ when T Brown introduced it to him. He remarked, "I truly disliked that beat. I was asking myself, what does this guy want? What am I supposed to sing about in this song? But as we continued discussing it, I saw that he was genuinely excited about it."

The lyrics of ‘Inkweto’ began as a playful concept. M Izzo crafted them around the theme of asking for shoes. With T Brown’s creative input, the song was eventually completed.

A major twist came when Kamichi unexpectedly took the song from the studio and played it on a radio station without M Izzo’s knowledge. This bold move led to the track gaining widespread popularity and becoming a hit in an unanticipated way.

Reflecting on Kamichi’s actions, M Izzo expressed gratitude for his involvement. He said, "That song was not released by me; it was released by someone named Kamichi. I didn’t release ‘Inkweto.’ People were even assuming that I was drunk when I made the song, but I created it without consuming anything."

M Izzo clarified that the concept for the song didn’t stem from a particular personal story but might have been inspired by a school student’s struggle of lacking shoes.

He elaborated that he wrote ‘Inkweto’ over three verses, not expecting it to become a major success. Kamichi heard the track while T Brown was polishing its production and decided to share it publicly without informing M Izzo.

Speaking about the unexpected success, M Izzo recalled how Producer Piano from Super Level informed him about the release, leaving him completely surprised.

M Izzo views ‘Inkweto zanjye’ (My Shoes) as a career-defining track. He reflected, "That song surprised me greatly, and it made me realize I need to work harder, pushing myself to the maximum."

This compelling story highlights how M Izzo initially approached the song from a lighthearted angle, only for Kamichi to take it from the studio and introduce it to the public. This bold promotion significantly propelled its fame and serves as a reminder that music can rise unexpectedly to prominence.
