The match carried huge significance for both sides, as the two Eastern Province clubs were battling for promotion to Rwanda’s top flight.
Sunrise FC claimed victory thanks to Nigerian striker Kalu Daniel Ikpo, who scored both goals for his side, while Joel Emmanuel netted the consolation goal for Etoile de l’Est.
The encounter attracted several dignitaries from Rwanda’s Eastern Province, including Mugisha Richard, the Vice President of FERWAFA.
After spending two seasons in the second division, Sunrise FC finished the playoff campaign at the top of the standings with 13 points and received a prize of Rwf25 million as league champions.
Speaking after the victory, Sunrise FC head coach Munyeshema Gaspard said the win came after intense preparation following their defeat in the first meeting against Etoile de l’Est.
“Etoile de l’Est beat us in the first game, so we took time to reflect and improve, and the results are now visible. I prepared thoroughly in every aspect, and I knew Etoile de l’Est came into the match believing they were stronger than us. I think that confidence affected them,” he said.
Asked whether he would remain with Sunrise FC in the BK Pro League next season, Munyeshema explained that the decision would depend on discussions with the club’s management.
“My contract has expired, so everything depends on the willingness of Sunrise FC’s leadership. If they approach me and we agree, I will stay. I am a professional, and if another opportunity comes, I could also move on because that is part of life,” he added.
Besides Sunrise FC, Unity FC also secured promotion to the BK Pro League for the first time in the club’s history.
