Sudanese Teams Join Rwanda Premier League Amid Sudan's Turmoil

Rwanda's FERWAFA welcomes top Sudanese clubs Al Merrikh, Al Hilal, and El Ahli SC Wad Medani to its Premier League, enhancing competition and promoting Rwanda's hospitality and strong Sudanese relations.

This Friday, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) confirmed its collaboration with the Rwanda Premier League to allow Sudanese giants Al Merrikh SC, Al Hilal SC, and El Ahli SC Wad Medani to compete in Rwanda's top-tier football league this season. The move highlights Rwanda's commitment to strengthening regional football bonds and fostering competitiveness.

FERWAFA's Acting Secretary-General and Second Vice President for technical matters, Mugisha Richard, shared during an interview with Radio Rwanda that financial support was planned to assist the teams. He stated that this would address the extra six games being added to their playing schedules.

“We discussed with the Rwanda Premier League about providing financial assistance to these teams to help them prepare for the additional six matches,” Mugisha said.

One of the main factors behind allowing the Sudanese teams lies in Rwanda's esteemed reputation for hospitality. Discussing this, Mugisha added, “Rwanda is globally recognized for its hospitality. For context, a university from Sudan has even relocated here. The Sudan-Rwanda relations are very strong, and this step reflects Rwanda's wider culture of warmth and welcoming.”

Mugisha noted that the decision prioritizes mutual benefits, improving the quality of competition and fostering strategic partnerships. “These clubs—Al Merrikh, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli SC Wad Medani—are high-caliber teams with vast experience. They're stronger than most local teams and are often part of group-stage tournaments. Their inclusion brings valuable benefits to the league,” he remarked.

He further emphasized the broader vision: enhancing the Rwanda Premier League's competitiveness, showcasing Rwanda's global appeal, and bringing long-term advantages that go beyond sports alone.

The Acting FERWAFA Secretary-General also revealed that amendments to foreign player regulations are being reviewed. This would allow Rwandan teams to include more foreign players to align with participating Sudanese clubs, which face no such restrictions.

Additionally, Mugisha mentioned that Sudanese teams could be permitted to compete in other national competitions, such as the Peace Cup, upon request.

Moving to the high-stake Super Cup, Mugisha disclosed that it would run in January, with preparation discussions underway to finalize details of its format and execution.
