Rwanda’s National Team Advances in FIFA Rankings Despite Challenges

Rwanda's Amavubi climbs to 129th in FIFA rankings despite losing points after recent matches. Key games against Nigeria and Zimbabwe await in September qualifiers.

The FIFA rankings, updated monthly, are based on a detailed system calculating scores and evaluating national teams' standings worldwide.

In the latest FIFA rankings, national teams' performance in friendly matches, UEFA Nations League games, and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers takes center stage. Rwanda’s national team, Amavubi, achieved a positive milestone by moving up one spot from position 130 to 129.

However, despite climbing the rankings, Amavubi saw a modest dip in their overall score, losing 3.76 points and landing at a total of 1,123.60 points.

This shift follows their recent 2-0 loss to Algeria in a friendly match. Another match against Algeria, featuring their domestic-based players, did not contribute to FIFA's rankings calculation.

Algeria, having secured victory against Rwanda, maintains their 36th position globally according to FIFA rankings. Despite staying in the same spot, Algeria's score saw a slight boost of 0.84 points.

Globally, the top ten teams include legends such as Argentina, Spain, France, Portugal, England, Brazil, the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, and Italy — dominating the international football scene.

Regionally, Morocco leads African football rankings as the top national team, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria in second, third, fourth, and fifth positions respectively. Meanwhile, Rwanda’s Amavubi stands at position 37 within Africa.

Looking ahead, Rwanda’s national team gears up for important encounters in September as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Amavubi will face Nigeria and Zimbabwe in pivotal matches that could further shape their ranking position.
