Rwanda's Game-Changing Film Hub Inspired by Korea and Hollywood

Dive into Rwanda's transformative plan to create a state-of-the-art film center, removing barriers for local filmmakers and drawing from industry giants like Korea and Hollywood.

During a recent discussion, prominent figures in Rwanda's growing film industry addressed the pressing need for upgraded infrastructure to support filmmakers. The panel featured Dorcy Rugamba, Director of Rwanda Arts Initiative, Nibagwire Didacienne, Co-founder of L’Espace, and Rwagasani Braddock Le Sage, a seasoned writer and council member of the National Artists Council.

Rugasaguhunga Ruzindana, Advisor to the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, moderated the session. It was part of an artist-centered conference themed, "Professionalism in Arts as a Catalyst for Rwanda’s Development." The event was also graced by Dr. Utumatwishima, Minister of Youth and Arts Development.

Usanase raised crucial issues with the Minister, noting that filmmakers struggle to access premium filming locations such as hotels with advanced facilities. Challenges like restricted access to filming equipment have forced many to operate in rural areas. He urged government intervention to allow creators to utilize Rwanda's best venues freely.

“Minister, we implore your support to help us use top-tier hotels and showcase Rwanda’s stunning landscapes. This will significantly advance our cinema industry,” said Usanase.

Rwanda’s Dedicated Film Center: Revolutionary Progress is Near

In an interview with InyaRwanda, Rukundo Aimé Valens, actor and Vice President of Rwanda Film Federation, disclosed a master plan to address these filmmaker challenges. “We are working on establishing a film center under Rwanda Film Federation. For this project to thrive, we need financial and construction partners, including land acquisition. The space will cater to both local and international producers,” clarified Rukundo.

Rukundo pointed out global models like South Korea and the U.S., where top-notch film studios eliminate location scouting hassles. “Korea’s government designed specific filming zones, which creatively simulate diverse settings, like beaches, in indoor studios – a pure professional setup,” he said.

This center is set to integrate all aspects essential to filmmaking – from superior sound systems, filming facilities, and cutting-edge editing suites to delivering polished films. “With everything ready, producers will bring their actors and leave with completed projects. Our versatile setup will adapt colors, structures, or scenes to align with evolving cinematic needs,” Rukundo explained.

He added that Rwanda Film Federation has developed detailed project proposals and commenced fruitful discussions with implementation partners. Their goal is to resolve cinematic location constraints within three years. “While we may not match Korea’s monumental studios, we aim to uplift Rwandan cinema at our capacity,” assured Rukundo.

Through this groundbreaking facility, Rwanda will redefine its cinema industry, enriching the sector while boosting cultural tourism.
