This impactful initiative was held on Saturday to support the local community in Mangateen Camp, near Juba, and educate residents on proven methods to fight malaria, a persistent health concern in the area.
The campaign involved several activities aimed at reducing malaria cases, including:
- Cleaning areas prone to becoming mosquito breeding grounds
- Cutting down bushes that could harbor mosquitoes
- Raising awareness on effective malaria prevention strategies
- Distributing mosquito repellents to eliminate and repel mosquitoes
During the event, Colonel Leodomir Uwizeyimana, Commander of Rwanda Battalion-3 and representative of the Rwandan peacekeepers under UNMISS, commended the strong partnership between the Rwandan troops and the Mangateen community in this noble cause.
He emphasized the importance of community involvement and encouraged residents to actively maintain a clean environment by removing stagnant water and overgrown bushes to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
Simon Khan Lok, leader of Mangateen Camp, expressed his gratitude for the peacekeepers’ efforts, pointing out the campaign’s vital role in improving public health. He acknowledged the importance of educating residents while providing essential mosquito repellents to prevent the spread of malaria.
Malaria continues to pose a grave challenge for Mangateen residents, highlighting the significance of such proactive measures. Located on the outskirts of Juba, this camp benefits immensely from initiatives like this that focus on health promotion and disease prevention.
