Bantal, a household name in Rwanda's fashion scene with high-profile clients such as Alliah Cool and Butera Knowless, as well as international celebrities, opened up about a heartbreaking experience when his father disowned him in his youth.
In an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda.com, Bantal reflected on his difficult childhood. He revealed that when he was a young boy transitioning from primary school to secondary school, he asked his father for school fees. Instead of support, he was denied and publicly rejected during a village meeting.
He recalled, “When I was preparing for secondary school, I approached my father for financial help, but he refused. At a village meeting, while other children accused him of neglect and he occasionally pretended to know them, offering false promises, he went as far as claiming he didn’t know me at all. That disownment was devastating.”
The rejection marked a turning point in his life. Bantal described how he was forced to fend for himself and his siblings, facing harsh challenges but gradually building a better life through perseverance.
He said, “There’s nothing more painful than being disowned by the parent who gave you life, especially in front of a large audience. My father even told me to check with the local government office if I wanted answers, as he hadn’t officially registered me as his child. Despite a childhood filled with hardships, self-reliance and resilience carried me through.”
Bantal shared how he left his home in Rwanda’s Western Province with little hope and traveled to Kigali. Once there, his determination allowed him to break into the competitive fashion industry, eventually styling celebrities and catering to both local and international clients. His story is proof that difficult beginnings can lead to remarkable successes.
Now working with stars and crafting looks for important events, Bantal lives a life he once only dreamed of. Whether his clients are Kigali residents or visitors, his styling skills have gained wide recognition.
Through his journey, Bantal hopes to inspire others. He urges parents to reconsider disowning their children, imploring them to think about the emotional and future impact. “Take responsibility and embrace your parenting role. It’s crucial for a child’s well-being,” he advised.
