Rwanda Remains Optimistic About Hosting Formula One

The Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), Jean-Guy Afrika, have revealed that discussions to host the global motorsport event Formula One are ongoing, expressing strong optimism about the prospects.

They made these remarks in an exclusive interview with The Athletic. Jean-Guy Afrika stated that talks to bring Formula One to Rwanda are continuing and are closely linked to the development of the new international airport currently under construction in Bugesera District.

He said, “Discussions about F1 are ongoing, though not yet concluded, and they are connected to the progress of the new international airport being built in the country. We are competing to host a Formula One race in 2029. In fact, we want to use the airport as an opportunity to develop a new city in a meaningful and sustainable way.”

Afrika explained that plans include not only the construction of a racing circuit but also leisure and entertainment facilities.

“With Formula One, we need to build the race track as well as all the surrounding entertainment infrastructure, because F1 is largely about the overall experience. It usually lasts an entire week. Once the airport is completed, discussions with F1 will focus on delivering the racing circuit,” he added.

The RDB CEO emphasized that Formula One would bring benefits beyond just hosting a race, noting that it would also attract broader investment.

“F1, in general, is a sport of great value to us, beyond simply building a circuit. It presents long-term opportunities because it brings together global corporate leaders, technology entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth individuals. That is exactly the kind of ecosystem we are looking to tap into for near-future gains,” he said.

Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire also told The Athletic that negotiations to host Formula One are progressing well. “The discussions are going well. Formula One is a major undertaking, and as a country, you have to prepare in many different ways. Their requirements continue to grow, but we have demonstrated that we are a reliable and strategic partner. That gives us confidence that we can achieve this,” she said.

She further highlighted the additional opportunities that would come with hosting the race. “Indeed, many opportunities would arise—not only within Formula One itself, but also through the major companies and investors involved, opening doors for investment in the country and in sports more broadly,” Mukazayire added.

In December 2024, President Paul Kagame announced that Rwanda had formally submitted a bid to host a Formula One race. If successful, it would mark the return of Formula One to the Africa continent for the first time in 32 years.

Formula One is the premier global motorsport competition, consisting of 24 races each year. Reports indicate that if Rwanda is awarded the event, the racing circuit would be constructed in Bugesera District.
