Rwanda Police Arrest Two Suspects with Over 1,100 Rolls of Illegal Marijuana

Two arrested in Kigali for possessing 1,144 marijuana rolls. Police-community collaboration uncovered the illegal operation in Taba Village.

Both suspects were apprehended on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Kigali during a decisive operation by law enforcement.

The spokesperson for police in Kigali City, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, provided details of the arrest: "The suspects were found with 1,144 packaged rolls of marijuana inside their residence and were preparing to sell them in the Gisozi sector. They were apprehended in Jabana Sector, Bweramvura Cell, Taba Village, following crucial tips from vigilant community members."

Further investigation revealed that the marijuana stash was hidden in Ngirabatware’s house, while the co-suspect, Nyiranizeyimana, was about to transport it for distribution in Gisozi. "They were caught red-handed as they packed the drugs into a bag to start the delivery," CIP Gahonzire confirmed.

He commended the community's role in enabling law enforcement to act promptly: "The reports shared by residents highlight their growing awareness of the dangers of drug trafficking. This cooperation is a testament to the strengthened partnership between law enforcement and the community, and we deeply appreciate their ongoing support."

Marijuana is classified as a highly dangerous illicit substance in Rwanda. According to the country’s legal framework, individuals convicted of marijuana-related offenses such as production, cultivation, distribution, or sale face life imprisonment alongside substantial fines ranging from RWF 20 million to RWF 30 million.
