Rwanda Coach Adel Amrouche Slams Players Who Refuse National Team Call-Ups

Rwanda's Amavubi coach, Adel Amrouche, expressed disappointment with players rejecting national team invites ahead of Algeria's friendly. He stressed patriotism and discipline for the team's future.

‎This Thursday at 5:00 PM, the national football team of Rwanda, Amavubi, will face Algeria in a pivotal friendly match at Stade Ghahid Hamlaoui.

‎As preparations ramp up, head coach Adel Amrouche described the match as an essential step towards better challenges ahead. He expressed excitement over the return of several players to the national team after prolonged absences.

‎He remarked, "This is excellent preparation for the future. We have some new players. Seeing players return to the national team brings joy. It's a positive shift in mindset. Yes, we’re shaping a strong team for tomorrow."

‎Despite this optimism, Amrouche did not hold back in addressing poor attitudes among some players, emphasizing that the nation’s honor must come first and no one is above it. ‎‎He stated, "To say I am pleased with everything would be dishonest. I am not satisfied."

‎He elaborated: "Our role is to change such attitudes. We are introducing gradual modifications because some behaviors are simply unacceptable. Representing the national team means respecting the flag—it’s not trivial. This flag symbolizes unity and pride. No individual surpasses the nation."

‎Amrouche shared his shock at the players who rejected the responsibility of playing for Rwanda. He said he demands loyalty and passion from every athlete. ‎‎He expressed, "I’m stunned when players refuse national team call-ups."

‎He added, "Watching players take vacations and disregard their history along with their country is disheartening. Such individuals are not my allies—never."

‎‎Nevertheless, Amrouche reaffirmed his commitment to the country above all, stating: "This flag carries more weight for me than any young player. Those wise enough can easily understand these points. I am frustrated because I feel let down. It's even more disheartening since we rarely get to play consistent matches as a national team while I’m here."

‎He also credited his leadership style, based on President Kagame’s philosophy of combining personal development with respect, discipline, and patriotism.

‎"My approach aligns with the nation’s inspiring leadership. Set personal goals, be disciplined, and serve your nation with pride. I seek young players with character—ones willing to play for their country without demanding financial compensation," Amrouche explained.

‎He specifically highlighted Hakim Sahabo, who chose to skip the friendly matches against Algeria citing the need for rest. Similarly, Rafael York failed to join despite initially confirming his availability.

‎‎Amrouche assured that all players called up for the matches would be granted fair opportunities to play. He emphasized that age or club association is not a determining factor. He declared, "Only capable players will earn their spot. Performance, not affiliations, is what matters."
