This journalist is among 60 trainees holding the License D certification, awarded by Rwanda’s Football Association (FERWAFA). They participated in intensive training sessions to qualify for the prestigious CAF License C, issued by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
After successfully completing the program, Rugaju Reagan proudly earned the CAF License C. Speaking to InyaRwanda, Rugaju shared his elation about this achievement. He said, “Getting the CAF License C is something that made me very happy. I feel great because it’s something I’ve been aspiring for ever since I obtained the License D certification.”
The License D is issued by FERWAFA in Rwanda, while the License C-CAF represents the entry-level African continental certification for professional coaches. Highlighting the significance of this accomplishment, Rugaju stated, “Since I managed to acquire this foundational license among those offered in Africa, there’s hope that I can pursue higher certifications like B and A. I’m very happy, just like anyone would feel after achieving something remarkable—this brings joy and pride to me and my family.”
He further emphasized that undergoing such training does not solely prepare one to become a coach but also provides a broader perspective. “You don’t only learn this to become a coach. Sure, you can train as a coach, but you also gain knowledge about coaching techniques. Understanding football, tactics, and techniques adds value, especially if you’re a journalist analyzing games. It can also open doors to pursue other sports-related studies beyond coaching. You can venture into areas like sports management without being limited to coaching alone.”
Rugaju clarified that he hasn’t decided to fully commit to coaching as his ultimate career goal, as he remains focused on personal growth and education. He explained, “I can’t say that I aim to be a coach as my job right now. Currently, I’m still focusing on learning as I practice on a smaller scale as an assistant coach. What I will become in the future—whether a coach, a manager, or staying in journalism—will depend on what I continue to learn over time. As for coaching, I enjoy it because it’s a great profession. A skilled coach who knows football deeply can make a significant impact that’s enjoyable to watch.”
In addition to earning the CAF License C, Rugaju expressed his ambition to advance his qualifications. He plans to pursue the License B certification and eventually enroll for a Master's degree in sports. He also revealed plans to assist in coaching a first-division team next year. He said, “I want to acquire the License B certification, but I also aim to study for a Master's degree in sports. My path forward will depend on what resources are available and how God helps shape my journey. However, the License B is a specific goal I’m working towards. I don’t intend to become a coach immediately, but I hope to serve as an assistant coach in the first division next year. I’d take this opportunity as field practice while continuing my journalism career until other prospects emerge.”
Rugaju Reagan mentioned his plans to assist as a coach in Rwanda’s first-division league next year.
