Steve Rubanguka, the Rwandan football icon, announced his retirement from professional football via his Instagram account on Sunday morning. The 11-year veteran of the sport revealed that he has decided to close one chapter and start another, signaling new beginnings in his life.
Reflecting on his career, Rubanguka shared, “After 11 years in professional football, filled with memorable highs, challenging lows, countless travels, and cherished memories, I have made the decision to conclude this chapter. It’s not because something has ended, but because something bigger and more meaningful is beginning."
Throughout his message, Rubanguka emphasized the valuable lessons football has taught him, such as discipline, resilience, and the unique honor of representing Rwanda's national team, Amavubi.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude, saying, "Football gave me discipline, patience, and unforgettable moments, including the great privilege of playing for my beautiful country 🇷🇼❤️. I'll forever be thankful for this. To all the coaches, managers, teammates, and incredible fans who have been part of my journey, thank you for every lesson, every challenge, and every moment of support."
Rubanguka indicated that his focus has now shifted to the next phase of his life, driven by the leadership, growth, and insights gained from his career in football.
He added, "It’s time to concentrate on what lies ahead—to build, grow, and lead. Football has provided immense knowledge, and while my mindset remains unwavering, my goals have transitioned."
Born in Rusizi, Rwanda, in 1996, Steve Rubanguka relocated to Belgium in Europe, where he began his football journey in 2007.
Over his illustrious career, Rubanguka played for various clubs, including RFC Wetteren, K. Patro Eisden, Maasmechelen, and K. Rupel Boom FC in Belgium; Karaiskakis in Greece; Ermis Aradippou and Spartakos Kitiou FC in Cyprus; FC Zimbru Chișinău in Moldova; and Al-Nojoom FC in Saudi Arabia. He recently represented Spartakos Kitiou FC in Cyprus's second division.
Rubanguka joined Rwanda's national team, Amavubi, in 2021, earning recognition and admiration from fans back home.
