Richard Nick Ngendahayo: How a Journalism Dream Turned Into a Gospel Music Journey – VIDEO

Richard Nick Ngendahayo once dreamed of becoming a journalist, but his passion for gospel music led him to touch hearts across Rwanda and beyond. He shares how his love for storytelling and faith guided him into music, transforming his aspirations into a ministry of inspiration.

Richard Nick Ngendahayo, a celebrated Rwandan gospel artist, is currently in Kigali preparing for his highly anticipated "Niwe Healing Concert" at BK Arena on November 29, 2025. Once determined to become a journalist, his faith guided him toward a divine purpose—using music to spread God’s message of hope and love.

In a heartfelt interview with InyaRwanda, Richard recounted his childhood aspirations of becoming a radio broadcaster. He shared, “As a child living in Burundi, I would record songs using a radio. I didn’t know studios existed back then, nor did I understand the concept of artists, as they were simply known as singers. My family would often be amazed watching me record at home.”

At the time, the radio was a powerful tool for communication, and listening to voices through a microphone deeply inspired him.

Richard’s dream of becoming a journalist grew stronger, fueled by his admiration for a broadcaster named Willy. He explained, “There was a journalist named Willy who worked for a radio station in Burundi. His voice captivated me, even while studying. He spoke about things that aligned perfectly with what I’d be reading in my notebook, and that emotional connection motivated me.”

These early aspirations painted a picture of connecting with people through his voice, but Richard soon realized that God had a different plan for him.

He admitted, “Growing up, I never imagined being a gospel singer. But it’s the Lord, the God of Israel, who directed this path. I didn’t plan to do music or call myself into this ministry—I thought I’d simply be a journalist.”

An unforgettable performance in Israel became a turning point for him, revealing a new chapter in his life. In 2001, Richard released his first song, "Yambaye Icyubahiro," after recording it in a humble Ugandan studio. The track marked the beginning of his extraordinary faith-filled musical journey.

He reflected, “The song ‘Yambaye Icyubahiro’ was recorded in a basic studio in Uganda. I had no accompanist but managed to create something meaningful. Later, in 2004, I began working on my first album, ‘Niwe,’ which officially released in 2005.”

From that point onward, Richard’s career blossomed, with each creation guided by divine inspiration. His album, "Niwe," serves as a testament to his collaboration with multiple producers, all under God’s guidance.

“During the making of ‘Niwe,’ I would direct the producer on specific elements. Suddenly, I’d receive fresh inspiration and lead the process further,” he detailed.

While journalism was once his dream, Richard now devotes himself entirely to delivering God’s message through his music. He expressed gratitude for how his storytelling talents have transitioned into worship and uplifting others.

“My dream of becoming a journalist was part of God's grander plan. It prepared me to use my voice for spreading faith, hope, and praise,” he said.

Richard Nick Ngendahayo has become synonymous with powerful gospel music, recognized for transforming lives through worship. His songs, which focus on giving thanks and inspiring steadfastness in God, have touched countless hearts.

Fan-favorite tracks include "Niwe," "Sumuhemu," "Ibuka," "Mbwira ibyo ushaka," "Nzaguheka," among others, serving as anthems of gratitude and spiritual guidance.

Richard’s life journey is a testimony to resilience and faith. He stressed, “No dream is ever wasted. Sometimes, God reshapes them into your true calling, redirecting you toward a divine purpose.”

He continued, “My dream of journalism became my pathway to greater communion with God. Today, my voice reaches people through worship songs, rather than daily broadcasts.”

Living in Dallas, Texas, for the past 17 years, Richard returns to Kigali filled with excitement and determination. His upcoming concert is set to reconnect him with fans who’ve supported him through his decades-long ministry.

Expressing his heartfelt appreciation, Richard said, “I deeply thank everyone who has shown me love. Reading their messages gives me both humility and strength, reminding me of God’s divine presence.”

He concluded passionately, “The support for God’s ministry has touched me deeply. I’m ready to give my all at the concert. Now, I’m back and fully prepared!”
