RIB Detains Barafinda Sekikubo Fred, Others Over Alleged False Information on YouTube

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested several individuals, including Barafinda Sekikubo Fred, over allegations of spreading false information.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 29, 2026, via its official social media platforms, RIB confirmed the arrest of Barafinda Sekikubo Fred, Mazimpaka Patrick, and Nkeramihigo Japhet. The suspects are accused of disseminating rumors likely to cause unrest or public disorder through various YouTube channels.

RIB stated that the suspects are currently being held at RIB stations in Kimironko, Kicukiro, and Kimihurura, as investigations into the alleged offenses continue.

The Bureau once again warned the public against the misuse of social media platforms, emphasizing that it will not tolerate anyone who uses digital channels to commit crimes or violate the law.

Barafinda Sekikubo Fred, one of those arrested, previously sought to contest for the Presidency of the Republic of Rwanda in 2024. He had also attempted to run in 2017, but was not cleared at the time due to failure to meet the required eligibility criteria.
