Rwanda's President Paul Kagame commemorates Algeria's independence martyrs with a wreath-laying at Maqam Echahid during his official visit.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is on a two-day official visit to Algeria at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. As part of his itinerary, President Kagame is set to visit the National School of Artificial Intelligence (ENSIA) and attend a welcoming banquet hosted in his honor.

The Maqam Echahid Memorial, a key highlight of President Kagame's visit, is an iconic landmark located on El Madania Hill in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. This memorial honors the heroes who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence from French colonial rule between 1954 and 1962. It stands as a powerful symbol of Algeria’s storied past and the resilience of its people in achieving sovereignty.

The architectural uniqueness of the Maqam Echahid Memorial lies in its three grand steel structures resembling wings, converging at a single base—a visual representation of unity, courage, and the sacrifices of Algeria's freedom fighters. Officially inaugurated on July 5, 1982—marking the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence—the memorial also houses the Musée du Moudjahid, a museum preserving invaluable photographs, documents, and military artifacts from the independence movement.

Beyond its historical significance, Maqam Echahid has evolved into a renowned tourist attraction, drawing visitors worldwide. It serves as an educational site where guests learn about the valor and patriotism of Algerians who liberated their country. The memorial’s impressive design and compelling history highlight Algeria’s resilience in overcoming past challenges to build a bright future.

Rwanda and Algeria share a longstanding diplomatic relationship that dates back to 1978. Notably, Algeria opened its embassy in Rwanda in 2014, further cementing this partnership.

The collaboration between the two nations spans multiple sectors, including security and education, with Rwandan students pursuing academic opportunities in Algeria.

Since 1982, Rwanda and Algeria have signed numerous bilateral agreements encompassing economic progress, social welfare, cultural exchange, and cooperative development. The countries continue to prioritize enhanced partnerships in areas such as healthcare, trade, investment, security, and education.
