President Kagame Applauds U.S. and Qatar’s Contribution to Peace in Eastern DRC

In his end-of-year address for 2025 and the message ushering in 2026, President Paul Kagame commended the United States and Qatar for their role in efforts to restore peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, December 31, 2025, President Kagame highlighted that 2025 was marked by significant development achievements for Rwanda, particularly continued economic growth.

He further praised Qatar and the United States for supporting the peace process in Eastern Africa, noting that earlier this month Rwanda and the DRC signed the Washington Agreement. The agreement was signed on December 4, 2025, during a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Kagame emphasized that the approach adopted by Qatar and the United States represents the most effective way to address the root causes of the conflict in the DRC.

“I sincerely thank the United States and Qatar, working together with our African institutions, for supporting this peace process. It is a major step toward resolving, at its core, the long-standing conflict in eastern DRC,” he said.

The Head of State also affirmed that Rwanda is ready to implement the Washington Agreement, while making it clear that any threat to the security of Rwandans will not be tolerated.

“Rwanda is prepared to implement this agreement, but we will not tolerate anything that undermines the security of our people,” he stressed.

In his remarks, President Kagame and his family wished Rwandans and friends of Rwanda a happy and prosperous New Year 2026, expressing hope that it will be a year filled with joy and abundance.
