Pastor P, celebrated as one of Rwanda's most influential music producers, shared that since the beginning of his career, his primary goal has always been to create songs that resonate deeply with audiences rather than chasing recognition through awards.
In an exclusive interview on “Echoes of Fame” by InyaRwanda, Pastor P stated, “I never made music to win awards. I don’t know whether those who receive them specifically aim for them, but as for me, I’ve never worked for an award. In fact, there was a time when awards were being organized, and I even requested to be removed from the competition list."
He explained how competing for awards could lead to unnecessary pressure and deviate him from his true objective. Pastor P further highlighted that certain decisions in the awards selection process appeared unclear and unconvincing at times.
“How can I be one of the senior producers yet not have a single award?" he questioned. "I don’t mean to diminish awards; they exist and have value. There were instances where a song I worked on received the ‘Song of the Year’ award, or a singer I collaborated with won ‘Artist of the Year,’ but I personally didn’t receive any recognition. I found it puzzling and thought, maybe the criteria they’re using aren’t aligned with my work. So, I decided to focus on perfecting my craft."
Pastor P emphasized that he has never considered this omission a drawback. To him, the highest form of achievement is the genuine appreciation from music fans. “The most significant award is people. When someone tells me that a song I produced made them happy, I feel that’s the most rewarding recognition I could ever receive. I experience this every day, and it means the world to me,” he remarked.
With an impressive two decades in the Rwandan music industry, Pastor P has contributed to countless hit songs, elevating artists to greater popularity and enabling them to secure major awards. While he personally has not received award recognition, he finds fulfillment in seeing others achieve success through his efforts.
Over the years, Rwanda has organized various award ceremonies such as Salax Awards, Isango na Muzika Awards, Kiss Summer Awards, The Choice Awards, and Karisimbi Entertainment Awards, among others. These events often feature categories like “Producer of the Year.”
Pastor P remains a unique presence in Rwanda’s music industry, believing that creating impactful songs and establishing emotional connections with listeners outweigh conventional accolades. This dedication to authenticity explains his decision not to actively pursue awards.
Pastor P emphasizes that his ultimate goal during his 20 years in the music industry has been producing songs that touch hearts, not competing for trophies.
