Over 9,500 Students Graduate, Including 35 PhDs, at University of Rwanda

The University of Rwanda awarded over 9,000 degrees, including 35 PhDs, during a grand 2023 graduation ceremony. A celebration of education and success.

The University of Rwanda proudly celebrated its 2023 graduating class, which featured students from seven colleges offering a variety of academic programs. Notably, out of the graduates, 3,978 were female students, accounting for 42% of the group, while 5,548 were male students.

The degrees conferred during the ceremony included:

  • 52 standard diplomas
  • 238 Advanced diplomas (first university level)
  • 8,462 Bachelor’s degrees
  • 697 Master’s degrees
  • 27 Postgraduate certificates
  • 14 Subspecialty certificates
  • 1 Ordinary degree
  • 35 PhDs

High-profile attendees of this momentous occasion included Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva, the Minister of Education, senior government representatives, leaders of the University of Rwanda, and the proud families of the graduates. The event was a testament to the country's emphasis on quality education and future-oriented skills development.

Prof. Didas Kayihura Muganga, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, inspired the graduates with a powerful message urging them to embrace lifelong learning and adaptability to excel in today's dynamic, technology-driven world.

He emphasized: "Lifelong learning is a tool to remain relevant and valuable in terms of skills and knowledge. The job market is rapidly evolving due to artificial intelligence and technological innovations."

Prof. Muganga also reminded the graduates of the ever-changing nature of work and life, underscoring the importance of "curiosity, willingness to learn, and adaptability" as essential qualities for future success. He encouraged them to apply technology responsibly, highlighting that while artificial intelligence offers immense opportunities, it must be guided by ethical human values.

Established in 2013 through the merger of the National University of Rwanda (NUR) with six other public universities, the University of Rwanda now serves over 30,000 students across six colleges nationwide. The institution currently offers a wide range of programs, including 87 undergraduate and 138 postgraduate courses.

The graduation ceremony took place at the University of Rwanda’s main campus in Huye, attracting a large and enthusiastic audience. Attendees described the day as filled with immense pride, joy, and a deep sense of achievement for the graduates, their families, and the leaders who supported their journey.

This memorable event solidified the University of Rwanda's standing as a beacon of education and development in the country, portraying an inspiring image of academic excellence and success.
