On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, over 250,000 students across Rwanda officially began their national exams to complete lower secondary (ordinary level) and upper secondary (advanced level) education. These examinations, critical to academic progression, are taking place in 1,595 schools nationwide.
The Ministry of Education reported that 149,134 candidates registered for ordinary level exams, comprising 82,412 girls and 66,722 boys. Meanwhile, 106,364 students registered for advanced level exams. Among these, 101,081 students are from regular schools (55,435 girls and 45,646 boys), and 5,283 are independent candidates (3,382 girls and 1,901 boys). Additionally, inclusive education is demonstrated with 459 candidates with disabilities participating in ordinary level exams and 323 in advanced level exams.
This year's data highlights a significant milestone, with participation increasing by over 33,000 candidates compared to the 2023/2024 academic year. The greater number of female students underscores strides toward gender equality in educational access and achievement.
The exams are scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, July 18, 2025, marking the end of this significant academic event.
