In an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda, Nyirinkindi Ignace discussed the inspiration behind his new song “Namwita Inkotanyi.” He revealed that the song’s concept stemmed from a previous track, “Mwarakoze Inkotanyi,” particularly one moving verse that sparked his reflections on patriotism and the legacy of Inkotanyi, Rwanda's liberators. Nyirinkindi emphasized the importance of passing this love for the country to future generations.
"There’s a verse that beautifully conveys, ‘If only I could have a parent completed and gifted to Inkotanyi, and blessed with children who grow up to be called Inkotanyi, I too would be a hero as part of Inkotanyi,’” Nyirinkindi explained, spotlighting his heartfelt commitment to patriotic values.
He elaborated on his aspirations for his family, expressing hope that they, too, would embody the courage, values, and selflessness characteristic of the Inkotanyi.
The song’s second verse conveys a powerful call to action. Nyirinkindi urges parents to teach their children to love their nation from an early age. He passionately remarked, "When breastfeeding a child, a mother should also nurture them with love for the country, so that they grow up as patriots, essentially as Inkotanyi."
Nyirinkindi described his creation as a poetic tribute—combining themes of love, gratitude, and legacy—to Inkotanyi, commending their pivotal role in rescuing Rwanda from darkness and reviving the nation’s spirit.
Renowned for his contributions to traditional Rwandan music, Nyirinkindi is a familiar name in the genre. His career blossomed with hits like “Nkugabiye urukundo” and found widespread recognition through the patriotic anthem “Mutore cyane,” composed for President Paul Kagame during the 2017 election campaign.
Nyirinkindi continues to use his art as an effective instrument of advocacy—promoting love, sacrifice, and national pride. By weaving Rwanda’s history, cultural values, and taboos into his music, he firmly believes that such works stand as a timeless legacy for future generations.
Through “Namwita Inkotanyi,” Nyirinkindi passionately articulates that love for the country must transcend individual sentiment—it should be handed down to children and future leaders.
In his song, Nyirinkindi also celebrates Inkotanyi, acknowledging, “They gave us a new Rwanda.” He implores parents to transfer this sense of patriotic devotion to their children.
The artist declared, “I will carry the spirit of the Inkotanyi wherever I go,” while discussing how his new song embodies his unwavering commitment to patriotism.
Nyirinkindi rose to prominence with songs that gained remarkable attention during the 2024 elections, showcasing his ability to connect artistry with nationalistic messages.
