The
initiative is being led by Mwizerwa Germaine, popularly known as Gege, the
founder of Gege Lashes Lounge, a beauty salon based in Remera-Gisement in
Kigali that focuses on the production and sale of artificial eyelashes
(ingohe).
Gege
explained that the idea of opening the school was inspired by the increasing
demand for professionally made eyelashes in Rwanda, alongside the shortage of
trained specialists in the field. She noted that many young people,
particularly women, are interested in learning the craft but lack access to structured
and certified training.
She
added that she acquired professional training in eyelash production abroad,
where she also received certification, enabling her to master the technical
skills required to manufacture and style high-quality lashes.
Upon
returning to Rwanda, she faced challenges in accessing proper materials and
equipment, which are mostly imported. However, through persistence, she managed
to source and stock these materials locally, making them more accessible to
aspiring beauty entrepreneurs.
According
to Gege, the planned school will provide both theoretical and practical
training in eyelash production, application, and business management. Students
who complete the program will receive recognized certificates, equipping them
with the credibility and skills needed to secure employment or start their own
businesses in the beauty sector.
She
emphasized that the school’s main goal is to empower young people with
practical skills that can generate sustainable income while also reducing
reliance on imported beauty products by encouraging local production.
“There
is a growing market for eyelashes in Kigali and across the country, yet the
number of qualified professionals remains limited,” she said. “This school will
help close that gap and give young people the opportunity to turn their talent
into a profession.”
Gege
also encouraged aspiring beauty professionals to value every opportunity they
receive and remain committed to their work, noting that success in any career
depends on discipline, patience, and continuous learning.
The
establishment of the lash training school is expected to contribute to the
development of Rwanda’s beauty and cosmetics industry, while creating new
pathways for youth employment and entrepreneurship.
