Karema, who has Rwandan heritage, described her decision as a bold step aimed at representing students and driving meaningful change at one of Africa’s most prestigious universities.
In a message posted on Instagram on the night of March 16, 2026, she expressed confidence and determination, calling on fellow students to take part in shaping the future of their institution.
Addressing students of Makerere—popularly known as the “Mighty Hill”—she emphasized that history is not written by bystanders, but by those who rise and take action. She made it clear that her candidacy is not just about leadership, but about representing every student who believes in a better future for their university.
Born in Nakaseke, Uganda, Miss Karema attended Seroma Christian High School and Hana International School before joining Makerere University, where she is currently pursuing her studies.
Despite winning the Miss Uganda 2023 crown, her background once sparked debate, with some questioning her nationality. In an interview with MC Kats, she clarified that she is Ugandan by birth, with a Rwandan mother and a father from the Banyankole community.
Her campaign gained further momentum after unveiling her manifesto titled “Reboot – The Ivory Tower,” which focuses on introducing a fresh vision in student leadership, amplifying student voices, and strengthening unity across the university.
Karema’s entry into the race marks a significant shift in her journey—from beauty pageantry to student leadership and campus politics. Her popularity could play a key role in attracting support, although the position also demands strong leadership skills and the ability to deliver on promises.
As campaigns intensify at Makerere University, many students and observers are closely following Hannah Karema Tumukunde’s journey, eager to see whether she can turn her vision into tangible change if elected.
