In an interview with journalist Zane Lowe that aired on Apple Music on May 21, 2025, Miley Cyrus courageously shared her battle with a severe health crisis, describing it as a deeply traumatic experience.
The pop star revealed, “I went through a major health scare during a New Year’s Eve performance alongside Lorne [Michaels].”
She further explained, “I suddenly faced a serious health issue. A ruptured cyst in my abdomen occurred. At first, we couldn’t fully ascertain what had happened, but we decided to press on with the show.”
Miley Cyrus, aged 32, admitted that despite enduring unbearable pain, she continued performing but acknowledged the significant repercussions it brought. She said, “It was an incredibly challenging moment for me. I was in excruciating pain but pushed through the performance, and unsurprisingly, it took a toll on my well-being.”
This unforgettable performance, broadcasted on NBC, was a collaboration featuring Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, and Lorne Michaels, who is widely recognized as the producer of the legendary show “Saturday Night Live.”
Medical experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine highlight that ruptured abdominal cysts can arise from various causes. While some people may not exhibit symptoms, others endure severe lower abdominal pain and internal bleeding, often requiring immediate medical attention.
The ordeal had Miley considering leaving the music industry altogether. Fortunately, a heartfelt talk with Lorne Michaels provided her with the encouragement she needed to rebuild her confidence. She shared, “Lorne told me, ‘Everyone gets six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then they have to start rebuilding.’”
She added, “He encouraged me by saying, ‘You wouldn’t believe how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were ready to quit music. Everyone faces tough challenges like these.’”
Now back on track, Miley Cyrus looks forward to releasing her highly anticipated new album, "Something Beautiful," by the end of this month.
During the same interview, Miley also disclosed her ongoing struggle with 'Reinke’s edema,' a condition affecting her vocal cords. While the condition makes singing physically challenging, she noted it has given her voice the distinctive quality fans around the world admire.

Miley Cyrus opened her heart about a major health challenge that led to emotional struggles and even thoughts of quitting music entirely. Her resilience and willingness to fight back are now paving the way for a new chapter in her storied career.
