Javier Tebas shared his perspective on critical football issues during a media interview celebrating 10 years since Spain adopted revenue-sharing laws for broadcasting rights. His conversation touched on significant topics regarding football governance and reforms.
When asked about his relationship with Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez, Tebas clarified that their conflicts stem from contrasting philosophies on football management rather than personal animosity. He strongly condemned Pérez's push for the Super League, describing it as a poorly thought-out initiative that risks undermining domestic football leagues globally.
Turning his attention to FIFA’s Club World Cup, Tebas argued that the tournament does not fit into the already congested football calendar and questioned its overall relevance. He went on to label the competition as detrimental to the sport's structure, boldly stating he has no interest in watching it.
To resolve these concerns, Tebas suggested reverting the Club World Cup to its earlier format featuring fewer teams and limited matches or eliminating it entirely. He asserted that such changes are essential for the well-being and sustainability of football worldwide.
During the interview, Tebas also addressed the Ballon d’Or, highlighting Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal as leading candidates for this prestigious award in 2025.
In Tebas's view, scrapping the Club World Cup entirely would benefit modern football.
