#Kwibuka32: Skol Leaders and Staff Visit Nyamata Genocide Memorial - VIDEO

On Friday, April 10, 2026, leaders and employees of Skol Brewery Ltd visited the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, where they were guided through the history of the site as part of the 32nd commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

Since April 7, 2026, Rwandans have been observing the 100 days of remembrance marking the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During this period, people across the country visit genocide memorials to learn about history, while others follow commemorative programs, especially during the week of mourning.

As part of efforts to deepen their understanding of Rwanda’s history, particularly the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Skol Brewery Ltd visited the Nyamata Memorial, where they were briefed on the tragic history of the country, including how the genocide was planned and executed.

The Managing Director of Skol Brewery, Eric Gilson, said that they will continue learning about Rwanda’s history while also playing a role in the country’s rebuilding process, in line with the commemoration theme “Remember, Unite, Renew.”

The Head of Corporate Affairs and Responsibility, Emilienne Benurugo, explained that they chose the Nyamata Memorial to better understand the history of different regions. She emphasized that the visit goes beyond remembrance, noting that Skol will continue supporting survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

She stated: “Each year, we choose a different memorial to visit so that we can learn about the history of various areas. As a company operating in Rwanda and employing Rwandans, we have several initiatives aimed at contributing to the country’s continued rebuilding.”

A staff member at the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, representing MINUBUMWE, thanked Skol Brewery Ltd for visiting the site to learn and for their support toward preserving the memorial.

Located in Bugesera District in Eastern Province, the Nyamata Genocide Memorial is the final resting place of over 45,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

The memorial was once a church where many sought refuge, believing it would offer them protection. However, they were later attacked after orders were given that no place should be spared.

Previously, the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, while explaining why the site was recognized as part of the world heritage, said: “Each memorial has its own significance, and Nyamata represents those who were killed in churches across the country.”
