King James Says Guma Guma Pride Fuels His MTN Iwacu Muzika Festival Journey – VIDEO

King James marks 20 years in Rwanda's music industry with electrifying shows at MTN Iwacu Muzika Festival, reminiscing about Guma Guma and fan moments.

King James, a legendary figure in Rwandan music, has made a remarkable impact shaping genres like R&B, redefining the music scene with creativity and passion. He rose to fame in 2006 with unforgettable hits such as "Pala Pala," "Birandenga," and "Ndagukunda," solidifying his place in the industry.

Major Career Milestones

In 2014, King James triumphed at the prestigious Primus Guma Guma Super Star (PGGSS) competition for the second time. The achievement marked a turning point, boosting his visibility across Rwanda through nationwide tours and performances.

Reflecting on this, he shared, “It’s a blessing and a talent from God, I believe. It's invaluable because when you see the work you’ve done being appreciated, you realize all your efforts were worthwhile.”

Performing in Gicumbi: A Memorable Encounter

King James delivered a captivating performance in Gicumbi last week, rekindling connections with fans eager to experience his live music after a long hiatus. The artist’s timeless tracks like "Naratomboye," "Hari Ukuntu," and "Yantumye" invigorated the crowd, creating fresh memories for all attendees.

He expressed his joy, stating, “I’m so happy! It was truly a hub of love, just as you said. It’s always special when you create history in such remarkable places.”

King James also highlighted how modern live performances differ from those held during Guma Guma tours in terms of format and emotional engagement.

“Guma Guma used to be a competition; now there’s no contest involved. We’re performing for people who love us, whereas back then, it was all about competing. It brings back memories of how things used to be when we danced and connected with audiences,” he said.

Legacy of Guma Guma

King James recognized the far-reaching impact of Guma Guma not only on his career but also on the success of his peers who gained popularity, loyal fans, and the means to grow their musical journeys.

Turning his thoughts to the future, King James revealed he is preparing for an upcoming concert in Nyagatare District, a venue he hasn’t visited for years.

He said, “I’ve missed them too! It’s been a while since I performed in Nyagatare, and I’m hopeful the turnout will be great there as well.”

When asked about his feelings toward the absence of Guma Guma competitions, King James explained his perspective with clarity. “Maybe it would benefit others. Personally, I don’t miss it, but if it were to happen, it’d be exciting because it adds some thrill. We’d support it if it came back.”

A New Chapter in His Musical Journey

To mark his 20-year milestone, King James recently released the track "Mowana," which complements his celebrations. The MTN Iwacu Muzika Festival marks the culmination of his two-year hiatus on live performances in Rwanda.

King James acknowledged how Guma Guma sowed the seeds for his flourishing career, while MTN Iwacu Muzika Festival allows him to reap the rewards and grow further. Acknowledging his fans' unwavering support, he said, “It really shows that your efforts were not in vain.”
