Kigali Pele Stadium Barred from Hosting CAF Champions League & Confederation Cup Matches

Kigali Pele Stadium fails CAF standards, disqualifying it from hosting Champions League and Confederation Cup games, affecting Rayon Sports and APR FC.

Earlier this month, CAF released its list of approved stadiums for African competitions, which included Rwanda’s notable venues: Stade Amahoro and Kigali Pele Stadium.

However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially notified Rwanda’s football federation, FERWAFA, that Kigali Pele Stadium does not meet the necessary criteria for hosting high-stakes matches such as the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Kigali Pele Stadium had initially been classified to host various tournaments, including Champions League qualifiers, the Women’s Africa Cup, and youth competitions such as the U-17, U-20, and U-23 qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). It was also eligible for FIFA youth tournaments for girls.

This decision deals a significant blow to Rayon Sports, as the club planned to host their CAF Confederation Cup first-leg match against Singida Black Stars at the now-disqualified stadium. Meanwhile, Stade Amahoro, an alternative venue, is unavailable due to its commitment to hosting the UCI Cycling World Championship in Rwanda from September 21st to 28th.

The ruling has pressured teams to find solutions. APR FC, another major player in Rwandan football, has responded by rescheduling their CAF Champions League preliminary match against Pyramids FC. Initially planned for September, the match is now set for October 1st.

This unexpected development shifts the dynamics for Rwandan teams participating in CAF tournaments, underscoring the importance of meeting stringent international standards.
