From September 21 to September 28, 2025, Kigali hosted the prestigious World Cycling Championships, which brought excitement and global attention to the city. To facilitate the event, certain roads were closed, significantly reducing vehicle movement throughout Kigali.
According to an analysis conducted by Rwanda's Environmental Management Authority (REMA), air pollution saw a dramatic decline of 45% during the championships. This remarkable statistic underlines the environmental advantages of reduced vehicle emissions and eco-friendly practices.
Juliet Kabera, the General Director of REMA, highlighted the importance of the findings. She noted that cutting back on air pollutants greatly contributes to healthier, breathable air. Kabera urged citizens to maintain their vehicles responsibly and avoid unnecessary travel as a way to protect the environment.
She explained: “This should inspire all of us to practice better care for our vehicles, embrace sustainable transport options like shared mobility systems, cycling, and walking, and minimize unnecessary car journeys whenever possible. Cleaner air is achievable when we consistently make environmentally-conscious choices in our daily lives.”
The World Cycling Championships in Kigali provided a powerful example of how reducing vehicle reliance can positively impact both the environment and public health. Events like these remind us of the importance of sustainable initiatives in urban areas to create cleaner, healthier cities for all.
