In an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda TV, Gakwaya Celestin shared heartfelt insights about his extraordinary life journey, emphasizing his transformation from a soldier to a celebrated actor in Rwanda's film industry. Before his rise to fame, Gakwaya served in the RPA forces that fought to liberate Rwanda, spending nearly five years dedicated to military service.
He proudly shared, "I joined the military, and I am honored to have served in the RPA, now called RDF. It was during this chapter of my life that I chose to quit alcohol and smoking—a decision I stand by to this day."
Reflecting on his departure from the military, Gakwaya acknowledged the sacrifices and challenges he faced. In June 1998, he decided to transition out of military life to focus on his education, improving his health, and pursuing his passion for acting—a choice that would profoundly shape his future.
He explained, "I needed to continue studying, and I felt my talent driving me forward. While I faced repercussions for choosing to leave, I never doubted my vision for my life."
Gakwaya emphasized that his passion for acting was deeply rooted. He began performing in plays during his childhood and kept developing his craft even while living in Burundi, where he worked in media and cinema. His ambition later guided him to China, where he furthered his studies and polished his expertise in filmmaking.
Returning to Rwanda, he quickly made an impact, captivating audiences in blockbuster movies such as Serwakira and Sakabaka. Most recently, he released "Hell in Heaven," a film that dives into profound themes of human challenges and transformation, delivering a powerful message about hope and resilience.
As an iconic figure in Rwanda’s film landscape, Gakwaya Celestin continues to inspire with his visionary approach and unwavering determination to pursue his dreams. He highlights that although the journey to success is fraught with obstacles, persistence and belief in one's goals ultimately pay off.
His latest film, "Hell in Heaven," showcases an exceptional cast of talented Rwandan actors, including Valens—known for his roles in Impanga and The Bishop, and Sadam, popularly known as Mujomba, who shines in comedic dramas and now stars in the hit YouTube series Bamenya.
Other standout performers include Umutesi Solange, recognized for her role as Jessica in films like Makaca and True Love; Nzele, famed for his performance in Makuta; and Niyomugabo Leandre, a former journalist with Radio/TV10 and other media outlets—all of whom deliver riveting performances.
Over the past 15 years, Gakwaya Celestin has become a household name in Rwanda's film industry. Recently, he gained additional acclaim for his lead role in Bahavu Usanase Jannet’s cinematic trilogy, Bad Choice, which further underlines his versatile talent in acting.
In 1998, Gakwaya reflected on his bold decision to leave the army behind to chase his dreams of becoming an iconic film star.
On the same day he resigned from military service, Gakwaya committed to quit both alcohol and smoking, marking a pivotal point in his life journey.
