Hundreds of Rwandans Return from Eastern Congo as M23 Regains Control

Hundreds of Rwandans, mostly women and children, return home from Congo as M23 regains control. Many are relocated to safety in refugee camps.

Hundreds of Rwandans crossed the bustling Goma-Gisenyi border in Rubavu on Thursday, May 22, 2025. ‎‎The group, predominantly women and children, returned to Rwanda following the M23/AFC coalition’s takeover of Eastern DR Congo regions and the ousting of FDLR militia, who previously barred these Rwandans from coming home.

This wave adds to the hundreds who have returned in recent days. Among them, 360 individuals were resettled at Kijote refugee camp in Nyabihu District, while another 796 people were taken to Nyarushishi refugee camp in Rusizi District. ‎The latest group of 642 individuals is also set for temporary relocation to Nyarushishi refugee camp in Rusizi District.

Overall, returnees cite voluntary motives for coming back to Rwanda. However, some reported being encouraged to return by new leaders in North Kivu, specifically members of the M23 group.
