How to Know If a Helmet Meets Safety Standards

When riding a motorcycle, protecting your head by wearing a helmet is essential. However, not all helmets offer the same level of safety. Some are certified and reliable, meaning your head is better protected in case of an accident.

In order to continue safeguarding the health and lives of Rwandans—especially motorcycle users—the Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), established a helmet testing laboratory in 2024.

The purpose of this laboratory is to test helmets and identify those that meet safety standards, so that in the event of an accident, they significantly increase the chances of survival and protect the rider’s head.

This laboratory is the first modern facility of its kind on the African continent. It has the capacity to test 30 to 40 helmets per day and provides 100% reliable results.

This state-of-the-art and trusted laboratory has already begun its operations and has identified helmets that fully meet the required safety standards.

Currently, helmets that have passed these tests and have been approved by the RSB laboratory are available on the market. Everyone is encouraged to buy helmets that meet official quality and safety requirements. Such helmets must have a valid certification in accordance with RSB standards (RS 576:2024).

Before buying or wearing a helmet, it is important to first check whether it meets safety standards in order to protect yourself. One key indicator is the Identification Number printed on the helmet, which shows that it has been certified.

For both passengers and riders, it is also important to check that the visor is not cracked and that the straps holding the helmet are in good working condition.

Always make sure the helmet has no visible damage and that the inner padding is firm and in good condition. When you wear it, it should fit your head properly and feel secure.

Accidents happen without warning! Travel safely and protect your head by wearing a certified, high-quality helmet—because it is your first line of defense in case of an accident.
