As part of efforts to safeguard the health and safety of Rwandans—especially motorcycle users—the Government of Rwanda, through the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), established a helmet testing laboratory in 2024.
The purpose of this laboratory is to test helmets and identify those that are reliable, ensuring they offer maximum protection and increase survival chances in case of road accidents, particularly by protecting the head.
This state-of-the-art laboratory is the first of its kind in Africa. It has the capacity to test between 30 and 40 helmets per day and provides 100% reliable results.
The laboratory has already begun operations and has identified helmets that fully meet the required safety standards.
Currently, RSB-certified helmets are available on the market, and the public is encouraged to purchase only helmets that meet the required standards. All approved helmets must bear certification in line with RSB Standard RS 576:2024.
When wearing a certified helmet, riders should observe the following: Ensure the helmet fits firmly and comfortably on your head; Make sure the chin strap is properly fastened and secure and Always lower the visor while riding.
During the journey, riders should also avoid wearing helmets that face backward or are worn incorrectly, as such helmets cannot provide adequate protection in the event of an accident.
Although wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injury, it does not prevent accidents. This is why every road user is encouraged to be responsible, vigilant, and considerate of others to help prevent accidents altogether.
Accidents give no warning—ride safely and protect your life by wearing a certified helmet correctly.
