Gospel artist Prosper Nkomezi opened up about his inspiring journey in gospel music during an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda on Sunday night, October 5, 2025. This followed his attendance at the grand launch of Israel Mbonyi's fifth album “Hobe,” held at Intare Conference Arena.
The artist shared how Israel Mbonyi’s influential music first captivated him in 2015, leading him to make the life-changing decision to pursue worship music.
Recalling his early inspiration, Nkomezi said, “When Mbonyi debuted in 2015, I remember listening to his songs. At the time, I wasn’t singing, and I told myself, ‘God, I want you to make me like this young man.’ I aspired to be like him and prayed to God for greatness, even though I didn’t realize then that I could sing. I asked God to make me someone whose life would glorify Him. I fell in love with Mbonyi's music.”
Nkomezi revealed that his career breakthrough came in 2020 during a monumental moment at one of Israel Mbonyi's concerts held at the University of Rwanda's Huye campus.
“He’s a figure I admire immensely,” said Nkomezi. “Before hosting my first concert, I sought his guidance and asked for advice on navigating the music industry. His extensive experience was invaluable. Working on a song with him now marks yet another milestone and serves as a reflection of the countless lessons I’ve gained through his mentorship.”
Discussing their powerful collaboration on the song "Umusaraba" (The Cross), Nkomezi explained how the project came to fruition. “The time was right,” he said. “For years, we talked about working together, but it had to be at the perfect moment. As I worked on my album, I completed two songs — ‘Itegure’ and ‘Umusaraba.’
My heart told me the moment to collaborate had arrived. I reached out to him and said, ‘I have two songs ready; choose one we can work on.’ It was a natural decision, and he readily agreed. At the time, he wasn’t even in Rwanda, but he promised to create the song upon his return. We finally produced it, and it was well-received—it’s soaring to great heights.”
He continued, “I explained my concept and shared my enthusiasm, and Mbonyi aligned with my vision almost instantly. Even before he returned to Rwanda, his commitment was clear. When it was finally recorded, the song struck a chord with audiences and quickly gained immense popularity.”

Prosper Nkomezi shared that Israel Mbonyi played a transformational role, inspiring him to embrace the path of worship music.

Nkomezi disclosed that he once prayed fervently, asking God to give him the same level of influence and impact as Israel Mbonyi.

Mbonyi’s music has had a profound impact on Nkomezi's spiritual and career trajectory since 2015.

Nkomezi calls Israel Mbonyi a key role model who continues to inspire his gospel music career.

Nkomezi revealed that before organizing his inaugural concert, he sought valuable advice and mentorship from Mbonyi.
