General Benda’s Journey Through Music and Media Setbacks: Lessons for Aspiring Artists

Rwandan artist General Benda discusses the challenges of working with Diez Dolla's management, quitting Isibo TV, and learning crucial industry lessons.

In an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda, Rwandan artist General Benda revealed the daunting obstacles he faced working with Diez Dolla's management, which ultimately disrupted plans for his music video production for the song "Repete".

General Benda explained that "Repete" was envisioned as a milestone to showcase his dancing abilities and artistic growth. However, the song's video fell through due to unresolved conflicts with Diez Dolla’s management team.

He described the situation, stating, “They were the team behind it. You see, Diez Dolla is someone who stays behind the scenes. I didn’t speak directly with him; I dealt with his management instead. Diez Dolla was over there while I had to confront his management.”

Benda further disclosed that despite Diez Dolla’s personal wish for the song to feature a music video, his management resisted the idea. They even attempted to remove Diez Dolla’s vocals from the audio version of the track—a move that was firmly opposed by its producer, Prince Kiiiz.

Sharing his financial frustration, Benda recounted, “I had already spent money on tailoring clothes for the video shoot. But at the last minute, they told me to change the video production team. I told them I couldn’t pay more money for that. I had even planned to sell land to fund it, but they dismissed it, saying I wasn’t committed enough to proceed.”

These professional struggles were compounded by personal challenges when Benda’s TikTok account was hacked, resulting in a significant setback. He lost access to a platform he intended to use for promoting his work, alienating friends in the process and deepening his difficulties.

Addressing his media career, General Benda revealed that he stepped down from his position at Isibo TV due to the lack of time to focus on his personal endeavors. He explained, “At Isibo TV, I truly didn’t have time. They paid me, but I couldn’t find time for myself. I wasn’t doing the things people liked me for. I noticed this and decided to resign.”

The artist, who once collaborated with Uwase Muyango Claudine, added that he struggled to reconcile delivering results for the TV station with chasing his dream of growing as a musician.

As he continues navigating his artistic journey, Benda emphasized that he hasn't given up. Instead, he feels driven to share these lessons to help aspiring musicians understand what hurdles they might face in the music industry.
