On September 3, 2024, actor Francis Zahabu officially announced via his social media platforms that he was ending his journey with "City Maid," a beloved TV series where he portrayed the role of Steven for three years.
In an interview with Echoes of Fame hosted by InyaRwanda, Francis shared that joining the show marked his return to the film industry after years spent focusing on his fashion design career.
“Fashion, given the level I had reached, demanded a lot of effort from me. So, I asked myself: What requires less energy but still feels like my spirit, my gift? Cinema. That’s how I found myself going back into film,” he explained.
Reflecting on his experience, Francis appreciated his time on "City Maid" but admitted that his decision to leave was one of the most challenging choices of his life.
“Due to my deep love for cinema, this decision remains one of the most significant ones I’ve ever made. I don’t always live for what I want; instead, I live to fulfill what I feel inside. And when you’re required to make such a major decision, it’s never easy,” he said.
Francis acknowledged the emotional toll of his departure on his fans, knowing that transitions are never easy. Nevertheless, he reassured them that he had offered them his absolute best during his time with the show.
“During the time I spent with my fans, I brought them joy. I gave all the energy I was supposed to give, offering my talent 100%. But I eventually questioned whether the show offered me the same 100% in return for my expectations. That’s what led to my decision,” he added.
The seasoned actor also revealed that the lack of significant financial incentives for performers within the film industry influenced his decision to step away from "City Maid." He candidly stated, “There isn’t much reward involved. That’s part of why I decided to leave 'City Maid.'”
Despite these challenges, Francis expressed his willingness to engage with future film projects, provided his terms and conditions are respected.
