Rwandan rapper Diplomat details how Pacson, The Ben, and Producer Lick Lick played vital roles in his debut hit "Umucakara w’Ibihe," fueling his music journey.


In an exclusive interview with InyaRwanda, Diplomat explored how pivotal relationships shaped his rise in Rwanda's music industry. He revealed that being surrounded by influential collaborators like Pacson, The Ben, and Producer Lick Lick helped him soar as an artist. Their support allowed him to craft hit songs that propelled him to stardom, veering away from the trajectory of aspiring talents unheard of.

Diplomat reflected on recording his debut song, “Umucakara w’Ibihe,” in 2009 with the guidance of Producer Lick Lick. This impactful collaboration marked his official entry into the music world, setting the tone for his future success.

“This song gained instant popularity,” Diplomat acknowledged, adding that its reception transitioned him from an aspiring performer to a recognized name in Rwanda's music scene. "I owe this transformation to the key figures who guided me along my path," he emphasized.

During his formative years, his school encounters with Pacson, close work with Producer Lick Lick, and connections created in Kicukiro prompted him to fully embrace music and aim for crafting timeless musical pieces.

Diplomat shared, "The consistent presence of these individuals sparked deep inspiration within me. They helped me find confidence in pursuing my unique journey in Rwanda’s dynamic music industry."

He further recalled, "I never had to go through the aspiring artist phase, thanks to 'Umucakara w’Ibihe,’ produced with Lick Lick in 2009. It immediately launched me into prominence."

Highlighting Pacson's influence, Diplomat added, "Pacson and I were constantly close—his venture into media inspired me to reconsider a casual music approach." He noted how collaborations in Kicukiro with Pacson and Lick Lick profoundly influenced his creative dedication.

Diplomat credited Pacson for being a driving force behind his initiation into professional music. "I thought: Why not? I had both Pacson for creative exposure and Lick Lick to shape production quality."

Notably, The Ben significantly contributed to recording “Umucakara w’Ibihe”—especially refining its chorus. "The Ben’s mastery gave the song momentum to thrive," said Diplomat, adding immense gratitude for these collaborators.

"I will forever appreciate The Ben’s guidance shaping the memorable chorus. His input was instrumental in broadening my music’s reach." The chorus solidified the song’s profound popularity.

Diplomat expressed heartfelt recognition for everyone instrumental in shaping his initial steps in music. He appreciated their unwavering role in transforming his passion into 16 years of breakthrough artistry. "It wasn’t just luck; my dedication and love for creating brought highlights to my career."

Diplomat shared, "When I first created my song—only exploring music casually—I was amazed when its popularity skyrocketed. Unexpectedly, I shifted into becoming a prominent artist almost overnight."
