Titled “A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough,” the film was produced by Silverback Films in collaboration with Appian Way Productions, the Rwanda Development Board, and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
The documentary offers an in-depth look into the lives, social structures, and generational continuity of mountain gorillas living in Volcanoes National Park. It is centered on the story of a gorilla family once led by a dominant silverback named Pablo.
In the film, Attenborough reflects on his journey that began in 1978 when he first visited the park and encountered a young gorilla named Pablo. He follows Pablo’s growth into a powerful leader and highlights how his lineage continues to thrive today.
Attenborough notes that one of the most remarkable experiences for him was how these wild gorillas allowed him to get unusually close—something he describes as rare and deeply moving.
Filmed over an extended period in Rwanda, the documentary captures detailed footage of gorilla behavior, relationships, and generational life, giving it a unique depth and authenticity. Viewers are offered a rare opportunity to better understand these endangered animals and the efforts to protect them.
According to Irène Murerwa, Chief Tourism Officer at RDB, Rwanda has made significant progress in gorilla conservation over the past two decades through strong community partnerships, sustainable programs, and long-term investment.
She stated, “This film provides an opportunity to showcase Rwanda’s conservation journey to the world, combining knowledge and the efforts of all those involved.”
Beyond conservation, the film also contributes to promoting Rwanda’s tourism sector. Its production relied heavily on local services, including accommodation, transport, and tour guides.
It also created opportunities for Rwandan filmmakers and creatives through training and participation, supported by the Rwanda Film Office.
Following its release on Netflix, the documentary is set for an official screening in London on April 21, 2026, bringing together stakeholders from environmental, media, and film industries.
The film is expected to further position Rwanda on the global stage, particularly as a leading destination for eco-tourism, while highlighting the importance and value of its iconic mountain gorillas.
