In Rwanda’s music industry, songs that promote love for the country and celebrate cultural heritage have long played an important role in preserving national identity.
Through this new release, Cyusa Ibrahim continues that tradition by delivering a song rooted in history, culture, and patriotism while also giving space to a young artist who represents the future of traditional music.
Speaking about the collaboration, Cyusa Ibrahim explained that he chose to work with Layan Mpano because of his talent and commitment to authentic traditional music.
“He is a very good artist who performs pure traditional music without mixing it with other styles. He is also young and has a very promising future in this genre,” Cyusa said.
Their collaboration reflects more than just a musical partnership. It highlights a shared mission to promote and preserve Rwanda’s cultural heritage through traditional music, which remains an important pillar of the country’s artistic identity.
The song “Rusanga n’Izayo” carries a powerful message about patriotism and the importance of loving and protecting one’s country. According to Cyusa Ibrahim, the name “Rusanga” holds deep historical meaning connected to bravery and unity.
“‘Rusanga n’Izayo’ is an old song about patriotism. Rusanga was the king’s bull. When soldiers went to war, Rusanga would remain at the palace gates waiting for them to return so it could welcome them as a symbol of victory,” he explained.
This historical reference serves as a reminder that loving one’s country requires patience, unity, and collective effort during challenging times. The song therefore goes beyond entertainment, delivering a cultural and historical message expressed through traditional melodies.
Cyusa Ibrahim also noted that working with Layan Mpano was part of a broader effort to strengthen traditional music in Rwanda, especially since collaborations within the genre remain relatively rare.
“Working with Layan means bringing together artists who value traditional music. We must unite and work together to uplift this cultural heritage,” he added.
His remarks underline the importance of cooperation among traditional musicians in order to ensure the genre continues to grow and attract younger audiences.
The production of “Rusanga n’Izayo” brought together a skilled creative team. The audio was produced by Jimmy Proand mastered by Bob Pro, while the music video was directed by Shimwa Clement.
The visuals of the video showcase Rwanda’s natural beauty, traditional clothing, and cultural aesthetics, complementing the song’s message and musical style.
More than just a song, “Rusanga n’Izayo” stands as a cultural statement that blends history, patriotism, and artistic collaboration. Through this project, Cyusa Ibrahim and Layan Mpano demonstrate that unity and dedication to culture can produce music that resonates deeply with Rwandans and keeps traditional music alive for future generations.
