Burundi: Minister found dead in his car

Burundi’s Minister of Information and Communication, Gabby Bugaga, was found dead in his car on the morning of Thursday, April 16, 2026, in the Kivoga area on the outskirts of Bujumbura.

Preliminary reports indicate that he was alone in the vehicle at the time, with no security personnel present. The car also showed signs suggesting it may have been involved in an accident. However, the exact cause of his death has not yet been determined.

The Secretary General of the Government of Burundi, Jérôme Niyonzima, confirmed the incident but told Iris News that the public should wait for an official government statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.

Meanwhile, security and investigative authorities, speaking to international media, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to establish the cause of his death.

So far, no definitive explanation has been provided. While some reports circulating on social media suggest the possibility of a road accident, others indicate that additional factors may still be under investigation.

Gabby Bugaga was a well-known figure in Burundi’s media and communications sector. Throughout his career, he held several key positions, including serving in Parliament and working within institutions responsible for organizing elections in the country. He also worked as a journalist for the national broadcaster, RTNB.

He was widely recognized for his role in managing and disseminating government information, as well as promoting collaboration between public institutions and both local and international media.
