Rwandan singer Boukuru Christiane, renowned for her hit track “Gikundiro,” proudly represented Rwanda at the esteemed FESPAM cultural festival in Brazzaville, Congo. FESPAM is celebrated as one of Africa’s largest music and arts gatherings.
The Rwandan Minister of Youth and Arts Development, Dr. Utumatwishima Jean Nepo Abdallah, shared on X (formerly Twitter) his admiration for Boukuru's performance, lauding her for showcasing Rwanda’s talent on an international stage.
Accompanying his praise, the Minister posted a video of Boukuru captivating the crowd with her song “Gikundiro,” performed in front of thousands of festival-goers.
Although social media rumors suggested the festival might be canceled, Congo’s Minister of Arts and Culture, Marie-France Hélène Lydie Pongault, dismissed these claims, affirming that discussions around cancellation were never entertained.
She emphasized that preparations were progressing smoothly despite economic challenges and confirmed the participation of 15 nations. This highlights the festival’s importance and its role in strengthening African cultural ties.
The 12th edition of FESPAM coincides with the festival’s 30th anniversary, under the theme “Music and Economic Challenges in Africa in the Digital Era.” The event runs from July 19 to July 26, 2025.
Minister Pongault toured the preparations at Sony Labou Tansi Cultural Center, where she discussed logistics with the festival director, Gervais Hugues Ondaye, and interacted with dancers and artists, assuring them of government support to ensure the event’s success.
“Despite economic hurdles, this festival will happen as planned. It represents a beacon of hope for Africa,” Pongault commented.
However, concerns persist regarding the lack of event publicity and the absence of an official lineup of performers. Artists like Trésor Angelos Ofoueme voiced the community’s worries, stating, “We don’t see announcements in town, nor do we know which groups will perform.”
The grand opening ceremony was held at Congo’s National Assembly, welcoming over 8,000 attendees.
Highlights of the festival include international discussions on African music, exhibitions of historical musical instruments, free concerts at venues such as Mayanga and Kintélé, as well as screenings of documentaries exploring Congolese rumba.
Aside from Boukuru, artists representing other nations have also prepared to grace the stage. Some, like Kadeux Hybride, celebrated their involvement via social media: “I’m thrilled to be invited to FESPAM 2025. Together, we’ll represent Africa through our music.”
Organized collaboratively by Congo’s government, the African Union, and UNESCO, FESPAM serves as a platform to elevate African music and heritage.
Boukuru Christiane mesmerized the audience, performing to thousands at Brazzaville with unmatched energy and passion.
Congolese President Denis Sassou N’Guesso inaugurated FESPAM 2025, joined by multiple artists representing diverse cultures and nations.
Fifteen countries have wholeheartedly confirmed their participation in FESPAM 2025, underlining the festival’s wide-reaching impact.
The festival aims to offer a rich display of culture and artistry from participating nations.
Rwanda’s impactful presence shines brightly during the 12th edition of FESPAM.
