Amavubi, Rwanda's national football team, is currently in Nigeria preparing for the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Alex Nduwayo, who was called up to the national team for the first time, expressed his excitement, calling it an opportunity he never imagined.
He shared: “I’m very happy. I found the team to be excellent, and for me, this is an incredible opportunity. I never thought I’d get the chance to be called up, but through God’s blessings, they have selected me.” Alex emphasized that he and his teammates are in top form and determined to secure victories.
As a defender for the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) team, Alex revealed how he responded to the news of his selection. “As soon as I was informed I’d been called up, I knelt down and thanked God because I didn’t imagine this would happen. My goal now is to work hard and reach greater heights,” he stated with passion.
Another Amavubi player, Nshimiyimana Emmanuel, nicknamed ‘Kabange,’ also received his first national team call-up and voiced his joy. He said: “First of all, I’m very happy and thankful to God. It’s a massive opportunity to join the national team because many players dream of this, and being among those chosen feels deeply rewarding.”
Emmanuel described the experience as a dream come true and highlighted its importance in his career. He stated: “This was a dream I wanted to achieve, and now I’ve taken my first step. It’s a great start that could lead me to higher levels because being a part of the national team opens doors to opportunities one hasn’t had before. Being selected could even help me secure opportunities to play internationally.”
The opportunity to play for Rwanda’s national team has motivated Emmanuel to prepare harder for the upcoming football season, splitting his focus between his club, Rayon Sports, and the Amavubi team. Rwanda is preparing to face Nigeria in Group C of the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on September 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM.
The action continues on September 9, when Amavubi is set to play against Zimbabwe in South Africa. Currently, Rwanda ranks second in the group standings with 8 points, tied with Benin, which holds third place.
