Jasper Worship Team is a dedicated Christian choir built on the foundational values of evangelism and spiritual connection with God through music. Based in Hermon Evangelical Church, Ottawa, Canada, they were officially named Jasper by Bishop Augustin Kamarade in 2019.
"We started as the church choir but lacked an official name. The choir originated alongside the church in 2014. Currently, combining both singers and instrumentalists, we are 45 members strong, all committed to serving God through music and fellowship," shared Kim Alain Kazenga, the president of Jasper Worship Team.
In Kinyarwanda, Jasper translates to ‘Yasipi,’ a precious gemstone often referenced in the Bible. Notably, it was the twelfth stone on the high priests’ breastplate (Exodus 28:20 & 39:13) and the first foundation stone in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:18-19). Driven by a mission to share the Gospel of Christ, the group emphasizes salvation, celebrating His greatness, and praising Him daily through their music ministry.
Jasper WT represents a youth movement devoted to Jesus Christ, finding joy in prayer, worship music, and fellowship gatherings where they delve into God’s Word and share testimonies of His wonderous works.
To join Jasper WT, one must be a Christian, acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, possess musical talent, and have a passion for learning and spiritual growth. Members are given opportunities to develop spiritually, receive support in their daily lives, and hone their artistic talents. "We also ensure mutual support on our journey toward heaven," the leadership emphasizes.
Kim Alain Kazenga explains, "Being a part of Jasper is an incredible way to serve God, gain friendships, deepen worship experiences, and grow both spiritually and mentally."
Musical Journey and Key Milestones
Jasper Worship Team has achieved significant milestones in their musical journey. In December 2024, the team recorded live renditions of their songs, including "Calvary," which was released during Easter weekend across platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.
"Calvary" highlights God's unparalleled love for humanity and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary, marking our redemption and deliverance from eternal death. The song invites those who have yet to accept Jesus to open their hearts to His grace, declaring, "At Calvary, you find rest."
Celebrated for their exclusive concerts, Jasper WT has held three signature events uniting worshipers to glorify Jesus Christ. Additionally, they frequently receive invitations to perform in various cities such as Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. Kim Alain shared with InyaRwanda, "In the near future, we plan to host another concert while finalizing new songs for inclusion in our debut album."
Innovative Social Media Outreach
Jasper Worship Team has carved out a unique niche through their innovative use of social media channels, particularly Instagram. They regularly post captivating reels and videos showcasing their worship sessions to inspire others to participate and highlight their scheduled events.
The team also shares thoughtful interviews among members discussing their Sunday worship takeaways, promoting personal reflection and growth. This distinctive approach has resonated strongly with followers, helping spread their impact.
Kim Alain remarked, "Today, social media is a powerful tool for evangelism. It gives us the ability to instantly share the Gospel worldwide and connect with individuals who may never have attended church or known God—demonstrating the transformative joy of Jesus Christ." This strategy, pioneered by Jasper’s Media Team, has significantly boosted their visibility among youth, leading to swift dissemination of their message.
Global Aspirations for Gospel Impact
During an InyaRwanda interview, Jasper WT shared ambitious plans to expand their reach internationally through collaborations with prominent artists and choirs. Their goal is to create world-class songs and host transformative concerts globally. President Kim Alain Kazenga expressed, "There are plans for Jasper Worship Team to perform in Rwanda, the USA, and other countries, though this is a long-term vision."
"To realize our dreams, we aim to elevate our content to international standards. Success will depend on God’s guidance and available resources. We aspire to spread the Good News of Jesus across the globe," he added.
The Team Behind the Music
Jasper Worship Team boasts exceptional talent among vocal coaches and musicians. Yves Rwagasore, celebrated for his song "Njyewe Yesu Wankunze" (“Jesus, You Loved Me”), serves as their vocal coach alongside Meloe Byicaza. "We are guided by our coaches, Yves Rwagasore and Meloe Byicaza, along with Isaac Byicaza, a skilled instrumentalist who leads our rehearsals and songwriting efforts," said Kim Alain.
Strong Bonds with Their Church
Jasper WT firmly anchors its ministry within Hermon Evangelical Church, where they actively serve and grow spiritually. They attribute their progress to the unwavering support from their church leadership, including Bishop Augustin Kamarade.
"Our pastors guide us diligently. We are incredibly grateful to Bishop Augustin for his prayers, guidance, and steadfast encouragement. He listens to us and supports us like a parent," said Kim Alain Kazenga.
As Jasper Worship Team continues its journey, they remain steadfast in spreading the Gospel and showcasing the love of Jesus Christ worldwide.
