Alicia Ufitimana Reflects on Her White Coat, First Performance at UR Huye, and Choice to Study Medicine

Alicia Ufitimana, of the popular gospel duo Alicia and Germaine, was among hundreds of students at the University of Rwanda, Huye campus who received their White Coats in a prestigious ceremony known as the White Coat Ceremony (WCC).

The WCC is a symbolic event marking the completion of the first three years of medical studies. Students in Medicine, Clinical Psychology, and Pharmacy are formally presented with their white coats and take the Hippocratic Oath, committing to professional ethics, confidentiality, and excellent patient care.

The ceremony took place on February 13, 2026, at UR Huye and was attended by fellow students, faculty, and parents. Alicia, who studies Medicine & Surgery, performed for the audience, singing two hit songs from her group, “Uriyo” and “Ibendera”, receiving an outpouring of love and applause, highlighting the duo’s popularity in Huye.

Before the ceremony, Alicia shared on Instagram: "God carried me this far (to wear the White Coat). The journey continues, the calling is clear, and I’m truly proud of the strong, disciplined woman I’m becoming".

In an interview with ABA Music, Alicia expressed her gratitude and explained the significance of the WCC. She described it as a pivotal moment for students completing their third year, marking their preparation for clinical rotations. Students pledge to maintain patient confidentiality, demonstrate empathy, and uphold medical ethics.

“When I first joined university, I saw third-year students at the White Coat Ceremony and wondered if I would ever reach that stage. Today, God has made it possible,” she said.

“It is a day of great value, a dream come true, and a milestone for both me and my parents, who were extremely proud to see my progress.”

Reflecting on her journey, Alicia described her first three years at university as challenging yet rewarding: “The journey has been tough but manageable. It involves lectures, assignments, exams, and long days from Monday to Friday. It requires dedication and discipline, but I have grown so much in character and resilience.”

Alicia emphasized that the challenges she faced never made her consider leaving the university. Even adjusting to life away from home, including long days and unfamiliar routines, strengthened her resolve. She expressed gratitude to five people who supported her, naming her father, mother, elder brother Jeremie, and others who guided her through university preparations.

Why Medicine?

Alicia shared her lifelong passion for medicine: “I loved it as a child. It was my calling.”

She revealed that had she not chosen medicine, she would have studied law, another subject she is passionate about, aiming to advocate for justice.

Now three years into her medical studies, Alicia is focused on learning practical skills, though she has not yet performed surgical procedures.

Her father, Papa Innocent, who also serves as the director of ABA Music, praised her achievement: “Alicia’s White Coat Ceremony is a remarkable milestone. We value the effort and dedication she has shown over the past three years. We encourage her to continue working diligently in the remaining years of her studies while maintaining her exemplary character.”

Alicia and her brother Germaine, from Rubavu District in Western Province, are known for their songwriting and performances in Rwanda and beyond. The duo has released seven songs in just over a year, including “Ibendera,” “Uriyo,” “Rugaba,” “Ndahiriwe,” and “Urufatiro”.

The siblings are also nominated in the Shining Star Africa Awards 2026 for Best Star New Gospel Artist of the Year, with the awards ceremony scheduled for March 7, 2026, in Kigali. They have called on their fans to continue supporting them in the voting process.

Alicia’s achievement at UR Huye, combined with her rising music career, showcases her dedication to both her studies and her passion for gospel music, serving as an inspiration to young people balancing academics and the arts.
