A Calling Discovered at Home: The Role of Alicia and Germaine’s Father in Their Music Journey

Discover Alicia and Germaine, talented sisters transforming Rwanda’s gospel music scene with hits like “Uriyo” and “Rugaba.” Learn about their journey, awards, and future goals.

Alicia and Germaine [Alicia Ufitimana and Germaine Ufitimana] are quickly becoming household names in Rwanda’s gospel music. Known for popular songs like “Urufatiro,” “Rugaba,” “Wa Mugabo,” “Ihumure,” and “Uriyo,” these gifted sisters have captivated audiences nationwide. Born and raised in Rubavu, Western Province, they balance their passion for music with academic commitments—a feat they describe as “exciting” because each pursuit receives their full attention.

The Talented Duo:

Alicia Ufitimana, who is studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rwanda, is set to enter her third year. Her younger sister, Germaine Ufitimana, is a student at Ecole de Lettre de Gatovu, specializing in Languages and Literature (LFK). Alicia also contributes to the Bethania Choir at ADEPR Gisenyi, leveraging her technological skills to support the team.

Their song “Rugaba” has emerged as the crowd favorite, amassing over 648,000 YouTube views within 11 months of its release. Not far behind, their latest hit “Uriyo” is rapidly climbing in popularity, with predictions it might soon break the record set by “Rugaba.”

A Meteoric Rise:

Despite having been in the gospel music scene for just one year, Alicia and Germaine have received notable recognition. On May 24, 2025, they won their first award, claiming the title of "Best Gospel Artist” at the inaugural Rubavu Music Awards & Talent Detection competition.

Family Support from Their Father:

Innocent Ufitimana, a skilled producer and proud father to Alicia and Germaine, has been instrumental in their musical career. Reflecting on how he discovered their talent, he shared with InyaRwanda: “I heard them singing together one day, and I loved what I heard. I immediately took them to a studio. I even gave them a song I’d written for myself, ‘Urufatiro,’ because their rendition was so captivating.”

Innocent explains that his decision to support his daughters stems from his belief in nurturing their passions. “When I see my child loves something, I do my best to help them succeed. It was even easier because I also love music. It all aligned perfectly,” he said.

As an experienced music producer, he often advises his daughters to stay focused, avoid distractions, and uphold their values as Christians. “I prioritize motivating them and building a friendship, which makes it easier to share advice they can embrace and follow,” he stated.

Impact of Their Latest Hit, “Uriyo”:

Alicia and Germaine’s newest song, “Uriyo,” has already earned over 260,000 views on YouTube within one month and sparked 1,362 heartfelt comments. Speaking about its message, they said, “Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He promised His disciples a Helper—the Holy Spirit, who guides us daily and convicts us of sin, leading us to repentance. Jesus’s love ensured we were not left alone but blessed with the Holy Spirit.” This divine promise inspired their deeply touching song.

Future Goals and Global Ambitions:

The sisters have big plans for their gospel music ministry, aiming to release more albums and reach international audiences. They revealed, “We want our messages to cross borders, including creating songs in other languages.” InyaRwanda discovered their intent to soon start producing music in foreign tongues.

Alicia and Germaine’s journey into gospel music began in 2024 with the release of their debut song, “Urufatiro,” accompanied by a music video. Their father, Innocent, continues to play a key role through his company, ABA Music.
