The Abahamya ba Yesu Choir is hosting a heartfelt concert under the banner of "Operation Mahama", a unique initiative designed to blend the Gospel message with tangible acts of compassion. This project aims to demonstrate love through meaningful community development.
Sibomana Pierre, one of the Abahamya ba Yesu Choir Leaders, explained the mission, saying, “Jesus taught us to love and do good to everyone, especially those in the house of God. We are putting this into action as guided by Galatians 6:10.” Through music, prayer, and collaborative efforts, the choir seeks to uplift those in need while encouraging participation in building places of worship.
During their visit to Mahama Refugee Camp, they discovered the church previously utilized by the Adventist community had been closed for failing to meet governmental standards. Following discussions with local authorities regarding regulatory requirements, the choir resolved to fundraise to restore the church to compliance and ensure its longevity.
Initially, the estimated budget for the renovation was 8 million Rwandan francs. However, this target has grown to 10 million Rwandan francs as the scope of the work expanded. The renovation aims to provide a safe and officially compliant space for worship that will serve both current and future congregants, including new visitors from surrounding communities.
Founded in 1987 by four members, including Cécile Niyirema, the Abahamya ba Yesu Choir has spent the last 38 years dedicated to ministry. Over this period, they’ve achieved an impressive legacy, producing 11 audio albums with 150 songs and 7 video albums featuring 75 visuals.
Their official YouTube channel, Abahamya Family Choir, boasts an audience of 67,500+ subscribers, and their efforts have reached regional audiences, including neighboring countries like Burundi and Tanzania. Looking ahead to 2025, the choir is committed to impactful actions, particularly in supporting the vulnerable in a tangible way.
The upcoming concert will take place at Kigali Bilingual Church in Remera. The event brings together an array of exceptional choirs, including:
- The Way of Hope – Remera
- Inyenyeri – Kibuye/Karongi
- New City – Musanze/Kinigi
- Dukumbuye Ijuru – Mahama
- Itabaza – Kimisagara
The keynote sermon will be delivered by Louise Niyomufasha, who is set to share a compelling message centered on inspiring compassion and building empathetic communities.
Beyond the Mahama Church restoration, the Abahamya ba Yesu Choir is pursuing additional projects targeting construction of homes for their ministry partners. In one such initiative in the Kamonyi region, the choir performed the soul-stirring song "Elisa" to support their efforts. Across all these programs, their total fundraising goal for 2025 is estimated at 50 million Rwandan francs.
This inspirational concert is far more than a musical event—it’s a beacon of love, unity, and hope. The Abahamya ba Yesu Choir emphasizes their belief that no contribution is too small. Through collective efforts and generous hearts, they hope to rebuild the Mahama church and restore a sacred space for fellowship and worship in the refugee camp.
